Re: Advice on crack in barrel

ARGHH!...I just got a crack in the barrel of my Sam Murray Flute  If someone could recommend a good woodwind repairer in the Toronto, Canada area it would be greatly appreciated. How about Forbes Christie of Windward Flutes in Nova Scotia? http://www.windwardflutes.com/restoration.html I am su...

Re: Advice on crack in barrel

It is important to pull the sleeve on the barrel, to release the pressure on the shrinking wood, some repairers will opt to pin the crack, which is a very bad idea. Another option is to wedge wood in the crack, but pulling the sleeve and boring out the socket and grafting new wood is the best possib...

Re: Very tight corked joint

Put cork grease on the tenons and it will slide right on.
BTW cheap cork grease: get a toilet seal from the hardware store, life time supply of cork grease!

Re: Purse-style Pads!

I have a flute from 1840, rather like a small-holed Rudall. The pad on the Eb key isn't sealing, and maybe it's time for all the pads to be replaced. However the repair fellow says he doesn't work on purse-style pads, if that's what I've got. Please tell me about purse-style pads, e.g. what are the...

If it is a Rudall design, it will be likely that it will play best around 21mm like Kevin said. Pratten flutes will not ...
