Re: Advice on crack in barrel
It is important to pull the sleeve on the barrel, to release the pressure on the shrinking wood, some repairers will opt to pin the crack, which is a very bad idea. Another option is to wedge wood in the crack, but pulling the sleeve and boring out the socket and grafting new wood is the best possib...

Re: Very tight corked joint
Put cork grease on the tenons and it will slide right on.
BTW cheap cork grease: get a toilet seal from the hardware store, life time supply of cork grease!

Re: Purse-style Pads!
This will give you a lot of detail: http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/Purse-pads_or_Elastic-Balls.htm Bob It just so happened that when hewas compiling the info on the elastic balls, I was restoring one of the flutes made by the author of the article, Thomas Lindsey so I disected one of his original pads...

Re: Purse-style Pads!
I have a flute from 1840, rather like a small-holed Rudall. The pad on the Eb key isn't sealing, and maybe it's time for all the pads to be replaced. However the repair fellow says he doesn't work on purse-style pads, if that's what I've got. Please tell me about purse-style pads, e.g. what are the...

Re: How to adjust the cork without the screw
Ok thank, now I know hot to measure the stating distance!!! Ideally, you want the first and second octave to be in tune with each other, I check the A in both octaves. If it is a Rudall design, it will be likely that it will play best around 21mm like Kevin said. Pratten flutes will not ...
