Re: Help with A and B high notes

I have trouble with the high A and B notes too. I think it is because they are loud enough to be heard and I don't have the confidence to be heard making any mistakes at such a high squeaky pitch that everybody can hear. I have the same problem with my flute, too, and I mostly have the problem when ...

Re: Learning on your own?

You'll probably get a lot of people saying to learn by ear. It's really the best way. About 5 or maybe 7 years ago I started bringing a fiddle to an old-time jam. At an old-time jam they look at you funny if you DON'T try to play tunes you don't already know. So I'd work out the tunes on my fiddle d...

Re: Chrome whistles

Thank you for that tip, Jerry. And thank you for that whistle. I was hoping to finally have a whistle that is in tune and figured if it had been modified, it must be pretty close to in tune. I have been playing fiddle (badly) for about 5 years at an old-time jam and so my ear is more trained than it...

Re: Chrome whistles

Well, it was both the head getting clogged and moisture running out of the finger holes and dripping out all over my pants. I guess I slobber. Plus I was drinking a beer (not a Guiness and sorry, it was an old-time jam, not Irish.)

Chrome whistles

I just received a Blackbird. It's really nice. It's chrome (or some kind of silver metal) instead of brass. Is it just me or does chrome get all stuffed up with moisture really easily? I could barely make it through a whole tune without having to shake out the moisture. I mean it's drooling out the ...

Re: Whistle & Flute player considering learning violin

I bought a Chinese fiddle about 15 years ago for $100. I switched from Irish flute to American fiddle about 5 years ago when our Irish session disappeared. A friend of mine who played Irish fiddle once told me that to play fiddle you must embrace your suckiness. So I've tried to learn with that in m...

Re: Learning Tunes by Ear

I have not been to chiff and fipple in a long time. Our Irish session disappeared (or perhaps became less open) so I have been playing American old-time instead (on the fiddle.) I only play my whistle alone (and my flute almost never) and usually only old-time music now since I never have any Irish ...

Re: Thoughts on WHOAD

My first whistle was a $10 Acorn. It's my best and favorite whistle. I have been able try other people's fancy whistles and I never like them as much as mine. I bought another whistle when I thought I lost it. Not as good but similar. No brand name. I guess I do not understand WHOAD. I think practic...

Re: Carey Parks Whistle question

Yeah, that does help. I do sometimes use the whisper method but that's not quite the same as actually playing the whistle. I'll have to think about it some more. I'm not a whistle acquisition person. I might bring my flute to the beach instead, but that pocket-size feature of the whistle is also app...

Carey Parks Whistle question

I saw the Carey Parks Walkabout Whistle and was really interested because of the whole volume thing. Plus the sound quality that I heard was really sweet. How quiet is the quiet setting? I'm not looking to be so quiet I can practice in an apartment and not wake the day-sleepers. I just thought maybe...

Re: Holiday Acquisitions!!!

I got an iPod touch for Christmas so the first (and so far only) app I bought was one of Michael Eskin's concertina apps. I got the ButtonBox app. It's a lot of fun to play with. As for flutes, all I got was time to play it. I haven't played my flute in a year or so. I now play only for myself as th...

Re: waste not 1

My truck is 15 years old and has 85,000 miles on it. I think my laptop is 5 years old. I don't own a TV but there is one in the living room. I have no idea how old it is. I didn't count it in the poll. By the way, I have never bought a car in my whole life. My dad gave me the truck. Before that he g...

Wild mushrooms

This is my Man and some of our mushrooms. We've spent the week harvesting wild chanterelle mushrooms. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5125/5301485028_b2fc0097cc.jpg Finding food has to be the most fun thing ever. I've collected berries, nuts, wild greens and now mushrooms. I'm seriously thinking I ne...

Re: I've been asking people this question all year

Time is running out. If a musical group/person asked you to join their show, who would you join? The answers to the questions that people have asked all year have been: 1. Whichever musical talent you would need, you would have in abundance. 2. Yes, it's possible to have two lead guitarists and to ...

That's not what I thought a black hole looks like. I thought they were pin-point small.
