Re: Brilliant? well, it's out there, anyways

The term 'brilliant' imparts different meanings on either side of the pond. Over here it's further from 'pretty good', and closer to 'genius'.
So, maybe call the US pressing 'The Pretty Good Irish Flute'?

Not much to hear from a fife in that register, I'm afraid.

But Sweetheart is a good idea. Their D whistles in wood, Dymondwood or plastic are very good, will pass for "period-correct" in public circles, and are generally loud.

Re: "Regular tempo" and finding the new setting on the fly

I have the impression the speed at which sessions in the US move is higher than they are here on the Back of Beyond. Depends, of course, on the session. My experience is that US sessions are often pretty fiddle-driven, which can lead to excessive speed especially when there's a competitive undercur...

There's nothing new under the sun.

But, back to topic, I experimented by drilling a C hole into an old Feadog. Worked great, and I worked with it, but decided eventually that it didn't advance my playing in any real way. YMMV.

And yet I find myself needing to distinguish between the playing of a free-form improvisor, however inspired, and one who has built a genuine foundation through disciplined study of a vibrant living tradition.

Out of respect, I'd have called it 'Meditation on Low Whistle', or some such.

Re: Vincent Broderick

There's a picture of them together in Vol. 2. His name is Antoin Mac Gabhann, and he's credited in the acknowledgments. I'm not sure where the 'Smith' came from. :-?

Vincent Broderick

Does anyone know how I can get the recordings to accompany Volume 1 of Vincent Broderick's 'Turoe Stone Collection' ? I know Volume 2 comes with a CD now, which is great. Volume 1 once had a cassette tape to go with it, but it currently sells without any audio. I've been learning a few of the tunes ...

Re: Cruinniú na bhFliúit - The Flute Meeting 2014

That was lovely! I had the good fortune to attend last year, and that's a great representation of what to expect from Conal. What impressed me most was watching him pull tunes from his head and scribe the abc onto a whiteboard faster than I can write my own name. I think he's an engineer by trade, a...
