The Chinese have the same instrument, and a very rich tradition of accessible music for it. It's called guanzi, literally "tube." http://www.asza.com/iguan.shtml http://www.melodyofchina.com/06instruments/guanzi.html (This one has a demo clip.) http://en.chinabroadcast.cn/1702/2005-4-29/12...

Is it "acid into water" or "water into acid" when diluting? AIW is in alphabetical order, but I don't trust my memory. Is there a device which will help one remember how to spell mnemonic?

The "long" F-natural is what most chanters have, these days. Accessible to the little finger of the upper hand. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid133/p167e609e4d870293d61db0768d3a61cd/f78d03c6.jpg The "short" key is accessible to the ring finger of the lower hand: http://w...

Joseph, Pertubations are variations in the internal dimensions of the bore which most people say are critical to good tuning. I remember a posting a while back by someone who had measuerd a Preshaw chanter and found it to be totally straight, yet it had marvelous tone and intonation. Cheers, DavidG...

Quinn told me at some point that's a Harrington method. k The supposed Harrington valve that I saw, and upon which I based a design I executed many times, was most similar to Diagram E on Chris Bayley's drawings. It had a wedge, just as can be seen in the pictures Pat D'Arcy has put up, but the wed...

The instrument the Little Green Man is referring to is indeed a flute-like instrument with a free reed. It is called bawu , but the w in the pinyin transliteration is perhaps misleading. It comes out as something like bah oo. http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid149/pb98f932c1053374eb278b45cc3e0...

I was recently reminded of a program I heard a few months back on NPR having to do with attempts made to rehabilitate folks with various antisocial behaviors using aversion therapy. The details of the story were pretty icky. Perhaps some of you also heard it: noxious fumes associated with... well, p...

This looks very much like the bellows which would have gone with the K&Q B set that was advertised on this forum a few months ago. The pad pocket has been removed, and the leather sleeve has been removed from the outlet tube. The hinge block is also missing. The blowpipe also looks like one of m...

Identify the makers of these old things?

Here are some scans of some pictures I took a few years ago. Any thoughts about the origins of these chanters? http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid142/p9917aa082e6ec36a205baecc76982f3c/f6b374e1.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid142/p6a9358937a1f26cb18757aacd2b800a2/f6b374c9.jpg http:...

So, is this the TOK set or not?? I was under the impression that the TOK set was the one BK played on the West Coast in the early part of this new century. It is the set that was originally sold to Tom Kennedy. BK had it with him in Seattle in 2000, but the one he had in San Francisco in 2001 was a...

I am responsible for the date 2001 in Jim's recent edition of the initial post. We talked on the telephone on Friday, and that was the date I told him. On careful consideration, I have to think the set is a little older than that, but Jim added this information based upon what I told him on the phon...

The set in question is indeed in B, not D. It is a Koehler and Quinn set, made in 1999 or 2000. The bellows being offered with it is not the one that we sold with it, and I do not recognize its make. The B set that BK played at the 2001 San Francisco tionol was another set. It had a similar chanter,...

... That's not to say oak is bad, but I have found the splitting tendancy to require caution. I think stitched bellows are superior long-term, but OTOH as long as a nailed or stapled bellows stays airtight, the issue is purely cosmetic (and economic - stitched bellows being labor-intensive). See DM...
