Force bad.

One of the most interesting stories I have heard about getting a kid to learn the pipes was of strictly forbidding him to touch Papa's pipes. While dad was off in the pits, Junior would pull the pipes out from under the bed and figure out how they worked. Stolen waters, etc.

Delrin is not a good place to start from, certainly not if you don't have much experience with turning. It's difficult to turn Delrin without a lot of whip and chatter, and it takes a great deal of time and patience to get a decent finish on it. You'll be doing yourself a favor to use wood to begin ...

... Interestingly African Blackwood is know to be one of the most resonant woods, hence it's use in such thing a xylophone bars. Basically it rings it doesn't clunk. David Blackwood is resonant in the role of xylophone bar to a large extent because of the way it is suspended. If you hold the same p...

For doing what unions are supposed to do: helping make it possible for the people who actually generate something of value to be compensated fairly for it.

Looking for Mr Neal

Trying to contact Mr Stan Neal, on behalf of a fellow pipemaker in Brittany whose computer is apparently down.
Would Mr. Neal please contact me by PM, or telephone my partner, Benedict Koehler, at 802 229 0315?

I'm already in a partnership, so I don't think I'll be pulling out to go to Pakistan. Still, I'm open to offers. The time I spent in Lahore was probably the very happiest period of my life, c. 1972-73. The climate has changed since then, however, and I doubt if there's enough money in the game to ma...

You see, what they need over there in Sialkot is someone who knows how to make pipes, can actually play them, and who speaks fluent Urdu. I suppose that’s asking a lot, though, isn’t it?

One of the booster/members of the local UP club has a chanter by Mr. O'Grady, which in terms of appearance looks as if it would go very well with the set pictured in ausdag's post. I asked for permission to play it, and was very pleasantly surprised. Nicely in tune, with quite good Es. The reed was ...

If you attempt to cut a series of fine beads with the x-y controls of a metal lathe, you will need an extremely fine point to get down into the valleys between the beads. When this point describes the curves of the beads, it will leave a trail of v-shaped cuts which will resemble screw threads I ca...

Just the opposite. The cutters and fine control on metal lathes allow for much more precision in the wood turning, as well as decorating the metal. djm I want to see examples of this. We ought not to confuse precision with flexibility. If you attempt to cut a series of fine beads with the x-y contr...

I've never seen a chanter with holes like these. Can anyone give some information on how they work? Also, where did the idea come from - K&Q or someone else? The holes work the same way tone holes on any other chanter work. Perhaps you're confused by the black spots above and below each of the ...

I have no recollection of Lorenzo, or anyone else for that matter, offering me $18,500 for a set of pipes of any kind of wood whatsoever. Perhaps I am not the David he refers to? A couple of people have tried to bribe BK and me to advance them to the head of the queue, but to be honest, the reason w...

I use ebony not because I prefer working with it, but rather for the sound that it yields. It's a pain in the arse to work with, but I think that the best tonal results in all keys and bore configurations I've worked in have come from ebony. When I make something for my own amusement or use, or as a...
