A number of Scots are pushing for an official national anthem, and Flower is the preference of quite a few of them. I don't get why they don't use Scots Wha Hae--A rousing song that fuels Scottish patriotism, is easy to sing, is in the Scottish dialect, and was penned by Calidonia's Poet Laureate Ro...

I'm supposing that by "hissing" you mean that the tone is breathy. I can cure, or at least diminish, the hissing/breathiness by consciously making the lip opening as thin as possible. If it rounds out, I am wasting a lot of air, and the hissing increases. I'm not flawless yet, but I'm gett...

There is an Irish song, probably originally in Gaelic, that is sometimes called "The Cradle Song" and Englished as follows: My love, my pride, my pleasure-O My wonder new and treasure-O My love, my beauty, ever You Who am I to bear You here? It is a Nativity song that is usually sung acape...

Playing in unison is not the only possibility. A bass singer does not usually sing in unison with the baritone and the tenor. The flute could play the melody and the whistle in harmony with it, or vice versa, a concept I am working on for my band.

transposition program

A man I haven't seen in a couple of years was a good whistler, and he could do something I envy. If he saw a tune in Bb or something similar, he had some type of program in his computer that enabled him to print the tune transposed into D or A or whatever he was comfortable with. So he learned the t...

The too-good-to-be-true Flute

Many thanks. I asked the readership of this list for input, knowing that I'd get straight answers. Sure enough, no manufacturer is named. A strong hint of Pakistani origin. I am not rushed to buy another flute, but I am keeping my eyes open for a REAL deal. I'll keep playing my Tipple, which is real...

Does this look like it's any good?

What do you think of this deal? A find, or too good to be true?

My hand is much more relaxed than appears. Basically my fingers drape around the flute. If anything it's my left hand that's all strained and can't do hardly anything including ornaments. At the risk of more comments about my costume, as well as my housekeeping, here's a picture with a nice big bir...

Diane, I'm playing a Tipple also. I read somewhere that flutes with straight barrels, such as the Tipple, have larger and more widely spaced fingering holes than flutes with tapered barrels. Which may mean that if I can conquer the noting on a Tipple, I can probably play anything. I am finding this...

I'm a jargonizer, Jem! I much appreciate the correction, since use of incorrect terminology by the ignorant (me) is likely to confuse the knowledgeable (everyone else).

I'll go against the grain and say that at first my hands ached as well, but it wasn't a death grip. It's the difficulty with the stretch. The holes are so big and so far apart it's a challenge to get them covered. I despaired of ever training my fingers to stay stretched apart. After a while the pa...

Re: grip

Being a newbie both to C&F and to the flute, I wonder whether the forum has had some discussion on the various grips, such as "piper's" and "pennywhistle" methods. I'm feeling a bit awkward and open to suggestions. Loads! Try using the board's own search engine with keywords...
