Is a low G flute easier to play than a low D one?

Get that Tipple right away. Usual disclaimers--no stock in the business, Doug's not sending me any freebies, he's not my brother-in-law, &c. Buying the Tipple was the best move I could have made. By the way, I find it harder to play the flutes with the ergonomic hole positioning; mine has the ho...

Pancelticpiper, I too am a session ("seisun"?) player, but I also play in a band. I would like to be loud enough to be heard, especially since another band member and I are working on some harmonized duets. It's reassuring to learn that in your case, you actually gained enough unexpected v...

I've just acquired a low D Wicked Good whistle. It's very quiet. Have I reason to hope that when I get accustomed to it the volume will increase?

Far from the Madding Crowd

Found it. It's called the "Dorset Four-hand Reel." I understand it has a dance peculiar to it, and the bystanders in the film are dancing in what appears to be a sort of clogging style

Lighten up, Kenny! Hogmanay's on the way. Then Burns nicht. No excuse needed for being musical.

Far from the Madding Crowd

In the book by Thomas Hardy, Gabriel Oak (the flute playing shepherd)plays "Jockey to the Fair" as he is busking at the hiring fair. In the film he plays a very different tune. Anyone know the name?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. The Glaswegian is the Jacobite, whilst the Aberdonian is a Whig. Not what one might expect. Ah well. My ain Scots ancestors were blythe tae fecht for Chairlie. At any rate, doesn't Scots Wha Hae cover all wars against all foes? And could it not be sung by all political camps, as it cal...

No, I meant a low C. However, I read this post early in the morning before my third cup of black coffee, and my eyes had not yet uncrossed. It wasn't a C after all, but a low G, and they are very playable.

My bad. Sorry.

Wonder what "very used" means. Battered? very "usable"?

And low D is about all that most whistlers want to try. Low C sounds as though the holes must be a nearly impossible stretch.

Hmmmm. I haven't time to try it out, but perhaps if the fiddlers insist on D, you could take up your A whistle and play it in D from there.

Thanks for reminding me of Jock of Hazeldean. The melody is great and the lyrics by Scott are superb, especially if you can persuasively handle the dialect.

Sorry for the misspelling--it's still early in the morning.
