tionol

Neil; Yes, all of these factors are important to the success of any gathering; I would add: * good transportation (close to major roads and an airport, public transportation a plus). * a venue near civilization, so guests / spouses / weary pipers can go do something else for an hour without having t...

East Coast Tionol location?

Just a straw poll to see how many pipers would like to see a "East Coast" Tionol in their home state. The poll software restricts how many options I can list, so lets start with the original idea of a "Northeastern" Tionol (sorry Joseph). The legaleeze might go something like: po...

or . . .

OR . . . here's the chance to consider having the East Coast Tionol somewhere else on the East Coast besides East Durham! Time for a change, would be my vote, and I'm wiling to do some of the work to make it happen.

drone reeds

I've given one presentation where I made some oversized drone reeds (I have lots of big pieces of cane for this) and passed them out for people to suck on.

For some strange reason I never got them back! But it entertained the audience, even the ones who didn't care about the subject . . .

session tunes

Hey Leech; I'd like to offer a different approach; looks like you are from the Pittsburgh area, and probably hoping to attend Pittsburgh sessions? Just go! Listen to the tunes they play there, and ask the tune names if you don't know them. Practice up on the tunes you actually hear them playing and ...

fingering

billh sez: there are indeed standard fingerings which are 'correct'. To which I will certainly agree, but I can think of at least one important exception, C natural. I believe there have been several long threads on the board about the best fingering, which seems to vary somewhat with chanters, and ...

This looks like the second phrase of The Old Bush.
Bingo! We have our first match. Yup, based on that hint I was able to match the tune up with the recording I have. Thanks very much.

reel identification please?

Hey ho; I'm trying to identify a couple of reels, apologies for the very rudimentary ABC below, I never learned that language . . . 1. dB | ADF#A BC#dB | ADF#A BGEB | ADF#A BCdf# | eACe d possibly Callan Lasses?? 2. AAGA CA3A | df#ed CA3A I bet a few start this way, I'd be happy to have the names of...

djm has it right: What I may see as exquisite, someone else might consider a rococo monstrosity. I like my Coyne-style sets. I abhor the Taylor-style stuff. Remember the posts showing the metal engraving done by Gil Hocker on his Kirk Lynch set? http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=14755&hi...

I came across this shop selling accessories for pipes
My wife jokes that when I need a shop for pipe repairs, parts, or customization, I don't go to the music store, I go to the hardware store . . .

tuning tenor drone

On my Gallagher set, there is a small (1/2 inch) strip of leather wrapped once around the tenor drone and then glued to itself (imagine a tear-drop shape). This is a great low-impact way to add a handle to the drone slide and allow tuning. Its unobtrusive and removable. Now I don't know if this came...
