Re: Uilleann pipers and the concertina

It's the free reeds! Great sound that appeals to me for many of the same reasons as the uilleann pipes. Great sustain if you want it, droning, regulator-style chords, and of course no huffing and puffing. But folks who praise it for being able to "just pick it up and play" are ignoring the...

Re: New York Time's Interview with Paddy Moloney

I'd buy a CD of them *talking* about playing traditional music. It is especially frustrating after some of the talk floating around on the board about Paddy doing a solo piping album . . .

Re: New York Time's Interview with Paddy Moloney

Well, here's my chance, finally, to be surly on the UP Chiff Board! At least one of us read the NY Times article and screamed in frustration. Paddy was "50 / 50" about doing a 50 year reunion album with original members of the Chieftans, but no, his American producer convinces him to do ye...

RIP Mike Rafferty

Iris Nevins from the IAANJ emailed the following: The sad news is spreading that Flute Player, Mike Rafferty passed away sometime around midnight. He will be very much missed. He has played at IAANJ both as a session host, a session attendee, and in concert, he graced our stage with his wonderful mu...

Re: The Man from Clare

That's it! Thanks to everyone for responding. It's a great tune, and sits very well on the pipes, with lots of opportunities to add "Willie Clancy style."

The Man from Clare

Hi all;
Jerry O'Sullivan taught us a jig at the Piper's Gathering this year, a new composition called The Man from Clare. Anyone have the dots or an ABC transcription available?

Thanks,
JVF

Re: About a FS first post

I have seen quite a few first time commercial posters "use" the forum to sell pipes and then are never heard of again. Gee I wonder why they lose interest after they sell their pipes?? Let's be realistic, there are a percentage of folks who try the instrument and realize that they will ne...

sessions in Vancouver, BC

Can anyone on the chiff board tell me about the session scene in Vancouver, Canada? We'll be there late June.

What are we looking at here, a museum collection? A manufacturer's showroom? Coffee break at a Tionol??

Re: pipes in kit form ?

Of course, the potential is also there for a newby with two left thumbs to butcher their "David Quinn chanter kit," and then show up at a tionol boasting "hey, look at my David Quinn chanter." Offering a kit comes with a certain level of responsibility for the finished product, n...

Re: Periods of learning and long breaks in between

I certainly fit that description, started in 1984 with a less-than-ideal practice set, sold that and quit in 1989, and did not start again until getting a much better half set in 2002. Upgraded to a full set in 2004 and worked hard at it until 2009. I find my interest lagging a bit this year; time c...

Re: Drone reed closes under pressure

Darth; I'm going to guess . . . air pressure! :D Sorry, couldn't resist. Its a pretty common problem, solved in a variety of ways. Some folks swear by a bit of hair slid under the tongue to keep it from closing all the way. Gently "springing" the tongue once (or a few times) will sometimes...
