Well, this is really not addressing your question. But on Cape Breton Island almost all the fiddle music is accompanied by piano. I don't know what the tradition in Scotland is. I really like it---the people playing the piano are really expert at accompanying. I know a flute and a fiddle sound very...

Very sad news, and a great loss to the Whistle community.
I have never owned or played one of Glenn's whistles, though I do own two Busman's-which may never have come into existence without Paul having received Glen's guidance and inspiration.
Condolences to his family.

There are also a few 78 rpms of flute playing (basically a rehash of some McKenna sets) that have a jazzy drum and double bass as backing. interesting too. Can't think now who the player was. Sounds interesting! A CD of superb whistleplaying is at this moment at the CD reproduction factory and will...

I plump for 'inexpensive',as maybe 'Cheap' has derogatory connotations.

I love my Sindts-they really are quality whistles.
John is a real craftsman-I just wish my playing could do his products justice!

Don't know if this applies here - for some whistles, I find it easier to get the high B (on a D whistle) by closing the three lower holes. I find that this definately helps with the high B on my Howard. I almost sold it a while back,as I hardly ever played it due a perceived problem with the Howard...

Micho Russell,Willie Clancy,Jack Coen,Josie McDermott and Sean Potts get my vote as recommended listening for new and more experienced players.
There is always something to learn by listening to master musicians.

Mingus,Mingus,Mingus. Charles Mingus is one of the greatest composer/Bandleaders in Jazz history IMHO. Marcus' mention of his stint with Red Norvo reminded me of an album cover that I saw years ago -'The Red Norvo Trio, featuring Tal Farlow'-it's a TRIO and they don't name check the third member! Min...

The French Horn player WAS Julius Watkins-I just couldn't recall his name last night, and couldn't be bothered to look it up.
Gill Evans often used French Horns (and Tuba) in his bands,to provide a broader sound pallete than most 'Bigbands'.

'Tenor Madness' is a good Sonny Rollins starter (admittedly,it probably sounds fairly standard stuff these days),'Live at The Village Vanguard' with the mighty Elvin Jones on drums and Wilbur Ware on Bass is just fantastic. Also,I particularly enjoyed 'Sonny Rollins meets Thelonious Monk'-the length...

A further thought - have you heard Sonny Rollins?
A magnificent Tenor Player and magical improviser when he's on form- he's also one of the 'interesting' characters of the Jazz world.
