Re: Bodhrán Classes - Group or Private?

Hi Buddhu Why don't you have a go at the senior competition in your local fleadh next year, you might have fun doing it (I know I do). David Hey David. :) The Baldock "fleadh" isn't quite what one would expect from the name. I think this was its first year and in reality it's a collection...

Re: Bodhrán Classes - Group or Private?

I'm another unashamed goat worrier. There are good reasons for bodhran scepticism - largely the huge number of untrained people who crop up with the attitude that goes: "It's a drum, you hit it - how hard can that be?". They then proceed to do just that: hit it rather than play it. Lessons...

Re: Session etiquette for multi-instrumentalists

At one of the pubs I session at (yes, it's a verb now  ) I'm lucky to be able to hang my cittern up on the wall behind me; it being a Foley with the signature hookeydook on the head, I hang it by that from a leather thong and Bob's yer uncle. It's actually a lot safer all around that way and ...

Re: FS: Gliga fiddle, case, good bows, Kevin Burke DVDs & more

As I have the offer of a banjo for a bit less than expected, I'm dropping price from £250 to £200 + £15 for insured, recorded postage in UK.

FS: Gliga fiddle, case, good bows, Kevin Burke DVDs & more

Once again I find my instrument requirements changing. :( Our session/singaround/jam thingy now has a fiddler, but our banjo player has had to stop coming. Thus I need a banjo, but can't afford one. Much as I enjoy fiddle, it is the instrument I play least (because, to tell the truth, I'm not that g...

Re: Having trouble restringing a bazouki

Hey Will. A rough, and debatable, guide: If the GDA courses are the same pitch as the lowest 3 courses on a mandolin and the scale length is somewhere in the neighbourhood of 16" - 20" then what you have is a mandola (AKA tenor mandola). If the scale length were between 20" and about ...

Re: Having trouble restringing a bazouki

@ Fiddlerwill: If it's designed to be tuned CGDA then yours is a mandocello. Octave mandolin, by definition, is GDAE an octave below mandolin. The term "octave mandola" is, IMHO, best abandoned as it is misleading. An instrument tuned an octave below (tenor) mandola is a mandolcello, not a...

Re: Wife needs mandolin

Mandolin is my main instrument. I am Cheap Mando Man! There are some good ones about that don't break the bank. Some good suggestions already. Eastman 504 is a nice little A4 style oval-hole, archtop mandolin. I used to have one. Lovely woods, nice varnish. Very, very decent quality for the price. O...

Re: G Major Jig Suggestions

As Washerwoman is so popular/recognisable/cliched (depends who you speak to - I like it and play it) it seems logical to couple it with another of similar status. I think Kesh could work great as the second tune. I can't imagine it working so well with Kesh as the first tune... Father O'Flynn is ano...

Re: What if this was at your session?

Sounds fine to me too. I'd have no objection at all. In fact, I'd want a go on it. :) 2) Many uke banjos will indeed stand up to steel strings, regardless of what you heard. Yeah, it's mostly the frets I'd worry about on the Dixie. All-metal neck/fingerboard with molded fret ridges, not fret wires. ...

Re: Domra= Possible ITM Melody instrument?

I see no reason why it shouldn't work. Of course, you may want to avoid those sessions where mandolins, tenor banjos and even guitars are still treated with suspicion. Just say it's a newly rediscovered, but very ancient, kind of harp and you'll be fine. Re. soundholes... if you want to know how sou...
