Does the Anglo also have two "voices" (reeds) per tone? No, only one reed. That's the defining difference between concertinas and accordeons. No, the number of reeds per note is not the defining difference. Bandoneons, which are closely associated with tango music, have multiple reeds per...

ABC notation is also useful for indexing tunes, and for finding tunes in such indexes. Henrik Norbeck, who has ABC'd over a thousand Irtrad tunes, has constructed indexes like this one, which is for reels in keys beginning with D: http://www.norbeck.nu/abc/index/xreeld.htm So suppose you remember th...

Tom, if it's of any use to you, there's a very reputable restorer of old boxes in Duluth , Minnesota. That would be Helmi Harrington of the World of Accordions Museum. See http://www.duluthsuperior.com/mld/duluthsuperior/2002/06/02/living/3358880.htm But there are lots of other places ... I know of...

You'll get a few hits, including one for a query similar to your own, if you spell "accordion" correctly, with "-ion" on the end. Since Google doesn't automatically handle stems and endings, search on both "accordion" and "accordions." That said, it's ha...

I know nothing about them myself, but Hobgoblin Music has this faq page: http://www.hobgoblin-usa.com/faqmelodeon.htm As is stated there, Hobgoblin's page is "Very much from the English view of the world," in which button accordion = melodeon. Irish and American terminology differs, as I ...

So now that I know what a concertina is (well, I knew it was a type of squeezebox, but could never keep straight which kind), can someone tell me what a melodeon is... It depends where you are. Seriously. In Ireland, a melodeon is a one-row button accordion. In England, a melodeon can have one row,...

Fox, Your mention of a "Beaver Brand" concertina rang a bell. I've seen instruments of that make advertised on eBay -- and they're not concertinas at all! Rather, every one has been a button accordion. I've never seen a Beaver Brand concertina, though of course that doesn't mean they don't...

Got mine today, too. I am really pleased. This is the first non-cheap whistle I have ever played (I have a Clarke original, a Sweetone, SB and VSB Susatos, and a brass Gen, all in D) and the huge leap in quality was apparent to me immediately. The tone is full and rich across the range, octave jumps...

Anyway, for those of you who know what I'm talking about, 49 C&Fers clicked through the 'Andrea Corr Topless' link to the 'Busted' page. I have all of the IP addresses... What you left out of this account, fatveg, and both of your subsequent sort-of-apologies, is that your "joke" page...

SteveK had it right -- it's the "F:" line in output from JC's abc tune finder that causes the converter at Concertina.net to choke. That line only contains information about the source file from which JC plucked the tune ... it's not an essential part of the notation. I second the Weekende...

Enjoyed the pictorial. At the 2001 Swannanoa Gathering, piper Kieran O'Hare was playing, if I recall correctly, a Sindt head grafted onto a brass Generation C. There was black tape -- what I think was electrical tape -- around the joint. I could be wrong about this, because I knew even less about wh...

I suggest U.S.-based listers get on the e-mail list of Philippe Varlet, whose Celtic Grooves Imports business sells CDs that are difficult or otherwise impossible to find in the U.S. He has a web site at http://www.celticgrooves.com He periodically sends out an e-mail filled with brief reviews of ne...

I see two possible problems. 1. You've got blank lines in the abc source code, the first of which is right after the headers. A blank line signifies the end of a tune. 2. The abc converter at concertina.net may or may not support the V: field for multiple voices. The V: field is not "official&q...
