Re: PVC flute temperament
Since then I changed the length of the insert to 40mm, which seems to work better than the 50mm today! 30mm was not giving enough second octave lifting. So something around 40 to 50mm seems okay. I report back if i get more refined results.

Re: Fixing octave tuning for a Killarney whistle
It was the 'unusable' I had a problem with. It's a big statement. And I have have heard Bríd O Donohue, Ann and Nicky McAuliffe, among others play them without any fuss or apparent problems (and yes, they had them at around the same time I got mine, early-ish). That was on my mind giving that respo...

Re: Fixing octave tuning for a Killarney whistle
I've got a Killarney D and a C, both purchased new directly from Killarney in 2018. Out of curious interest: what is the bore or OD tube size of the C? Later that week I tried to compare all my whistles using a tuner. That was an exercise in frustration, as the measured pitches bounced around a lot...

Re: PVC flute temperament
From a discussion about octave tuning on whistles ( http://forums.chiffandfipple.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=108141 ) Tunborough kindly pointed me to this topic, which I read read only yesterday with great interest. I can now add results of my own experiments just done: Occasionally I've build some ...

Re: Fixing octave tuning for a Killarney whistle
I assume the insert has a cut-out for the window. Does the cut-out extend all 12 mm of the insert's length? Thanks for the link! Interesting! As to my own bore-restriction cylinder: on my own whistles I place this cylinder a little way below the labium edge. I make it roughly as long as the bore di...

Fixing octave tuning for a Killarney whistle
I like the Killarney whistle's sweet tone. But the second octave plays way too flat, compared with the first octave, and I need to push second octave higher notes extremely hard to play them in-tune. I see this as a design fault, which is common to cylindrical bore whistles, if no attempt is made to...

Bracker Whistles
Dear folks, I have got a few high whistles ready for sale: 1. D whistle, standard 13mm bore. £105. 2. D whistle, wider 14mm bore. A specially powerful whistle with a louder voice, good for outdoor playing. It has a C natural thumb hole (tape it over if you don't like it). £105. 3. C whistle, standar...

Re: Flutes in hand luggage (EU)???
yes, strange. We will see when the time comes when I want to board a plane using a walking stick! I got one in form of an overtone flute.... that should be nicely confusing!Steve Bliven wrote:My guess would be that a musical instrument might be of less concern than a walking stick or shilleagh.

Oh, that was nine years ago!afl2277 wrote:I looked online and found a post where someone had no problems, but that was from 2009. A lot has changed since then of course. Do you know if The Session post was recent? Had it got a date on it?

Re: Flutes in hand luggage (EU)???
yes, I could still do that. Just read a thread on The Session, and seems there were no problems with flutes in hand luggage. Perhaps I got a bit paranoid since my daughter was prevented from taking a walking stick with deer antler handle into the cabin, it had to travel in the hold.

Re: Flutes in hand luggage (EU)???
Has anyone had experience, good or bad, with one piece flutes or longer whistles, to go through security at the airport? I guess no answer may mean a good one, no problems?? I have not used air planes for more than 10 years...

Flutes in hand luggage (EU)???
Hi guys, a quick question: can one take a one-Piece PVC flute on an air plane inside hand luggage? I've got an Eb flute, which is just under 55cm long, so should fit to the airline's hand luggage requirements (KLM). But would Security allow it? Is it deemed a potential weapon (a short stick basicall...

Re: Tapered Windway
I taper the windway width. The width at the mouth end is a little wider than at the window end. It helps the flow (less resistance) and thereby clogging resistance. The rounded windway also assists clogging resistance, as does very fine smoothing internally, as does not having the windway height too...

Re: Cutting the soundblade
I wondered what techniques any whistlemakers who use curved windways have come up with in terms of a repeatable way of cutting the soundblade after making the headjoint blank. Making a jig for a dremel or hand-filing it sounds tedious and difficult to repeat. Working with aluminium tubing, I first ...
