Re: Anybody recognize this unusual instrument?
Just watching some YouTube videos about Fujara. Very similar to mine, but with some interesting differences. For one thing, I think I need a small mouthpiece and a leather tie to hold the sound pipe. For another, the ones played in Slovakia seem to be much bigger than what I have. But the main puzzl...

Re: Anybody recognize this unusual instrument?
How cool is that? It also explains why I couldn't figure out how to play it. I was trying to blow it transverse, but the photo shows it to be played vertically. I'll have to work on this. Now, to find some sheep.

Anybody recognize this unusual instrument?
My son and grandson came back from the thrift store one day. "Thought you'd be interested in this." they said, and I was. http://multipassionate.info/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/IMG_1688-1.jpg It seems to be some sort of walking stick flute. Five finger holes. http://multipassionate.info/wp...

Re: why no flute in Appalachian music?
Plus, if you think about it, metal flutes have been around in Europe for centuries. They would be less subject to the vagaries of climate, though they may also have been beyond the means of many hill dwellers. Native American flutes were often made by the players themselves, but this would be less f...

Re: Optimal Packaging for Recorders for Shipping for Repair
I've recently received two different flutes in a USPS Priority Mail long, triangular box, with plenty of bubble wrap. Both arrived unscathed.

Re: Just received my lovely Geoffrey Ellis flute!
At this point I'd likely chock up any inconsistencies you are experiencing to a developing embouchure. As you gain strength and control you will find your tone becoming more consistent from note to note. Makes sense to me, and I suspected as much. Thanks! BTW, your addition of the Shakuhachi style ...

Re: Just received my lovely Geoffrey Ellis flute!
OK, so I've been practicing on my Geoffrey Ellis flute for a week now, and I have a couple of questions. First, I am getting better at producing a consistent sound, including even the bottom hole most of the time. But I feel like I have to adjust the angle of the flute just a hair as I go up and dow...

Re: What's the difference between Unread Posts and New Posts
Just tested this for clarification. I clicked "Mark Forums Read" and then "View Unread Posts." No posts listed. However, clicking "View New Posts" gives me a list of posts. Are New Posts just the most recent, whether I have read them or not?

What's the difference between Unread Posts and New Posts?
When I click on these, they mostly seem to be the same list of posts. I like to click for a list of posts made since my last visit, as I mark the Forums read when I leave. I think this is New Posts, but I'm not sure I fully understand the difference.

...sideblown is the traditional way to play, but he got a better tone straight on with a notch. I've done a bit of looking around, and it appears that even in the hands of the best players, the ney, kawala and bulgarian kaval all have a hiss to them. If someone has overcome this, I haven't found it...
