watching the Tour
I'm watching evidently the last stage of the Tour available on cable. The further stages are only available on Peacock. I don't mind paying for Peacock for a few weeks, but I have a question that I can't find an answer for on the Google Machine. Can one watch live sporting events on delay? I'm not g...

Re: Classical music on Irsh flute (with keys)?
I don't play much ITM at all on my simple-system flutes. I play a lot of O'Carolan and Playford tunes, but I also love Telemann and Faure. I play the baroque stuff on baroque flutes, but I have a six-key and also a small-holed Irish flute with one key that's fully chromatic with a little lipping. I ...

Re: The daunting task
Some makers definitely do a better job with the E note than others. I have two other somewhat conflicting points: The player can compensate quite a bit for the veiled E note. It's usually much less (intrinsically) veiled than the cross-fingered notes on a baroque flute. Listen to a good baroque play...

Re: Drilling a hole in blackwood
Blackwood works pretty similarly to boxwood. It's denser and oilier, but the grains are both extremely tight. If you're pleased with the way it turned out this time, I see no reason to change anything. On the other hand, depending on your setup, if you noted the drill size needed, you might just wan...

CP: Whorfin Woods December 2022
I've updated the current stock on my web page: https://whorfinwoods.com/featured-one/ There are some seconds, but I've also listed the current batch of d's -- there's plenty of stock at the IFS, and so I figure till late in the month I'll sell some firsts myself. Send email to shorfinwoods (at) gmai...

Re: "What's the loudest flute I can get?"
What does it mean? "It's not the flute, it's the player" seems to be the conclusion. That's certainly what I draw from your test, but it's a little more subtle than that. I'm sure if I did the same test, I'd get the same results. One of my teachers said to me many years ago, "You hav...

Re: Slow Key-Easy Fix?
I've had a key get tight from a little movement in the wood. With the permission of the maker, I sanded just a little off the inside of the blocks and it was fine after that.

Re: Shipping to Europe
This was an outlier - not at all typical. Must have gotten lost or hijacked on a train: I shipped a Wooden Flute Obsession CD (1 volume only) to Finland on March 16 by USPS International First Class. Just cleared Miami yesterday. 5-6 weeks and still hasn't left the U.S. I sent a whistle to someplac...

Wow, that one in the middle is ridiculous. Knowing the rest are d's, I'd think it was a G. The Hermit Hill has a wall so thick I'd think they'd need to undercut the tone holes.

Re: Comparison of High D Whistle Bores
I tend to think of something much less than 1/2" or 12.7 mm as narrow bore and anything much above that as wide bore. The Burke wide-bore brass is around 14.3 mm (9/16), and that's about as wide a bore as I think is practical for a d whistle. 16 mm for a d whistle is well beyond anything I'd th...

Re: Key leaf spring repair
Temporary repair: put a rubber band around the flute body between the key pivot and the hole it goes to. Experiment with different rubber bands and how many times to wrap them around. I used that for a couple of years on an antique no-name flute and it worked great. I hope you're able to stay safe.
