Re: Question about types of whistles for sessions

Nothing to be ashamed of for having a nice instrument. It's a shame that other players would put you down for spending a mere $200 on an instrument. Especially when that wouldn't even begin to buy a nice filddle, flute, etc. Still though, you can usually spot the ones who are more about their whist...

Re: Which annoying reel should I learn next?

Sounds like Farewell to Vienna in double time. :) I'm all for F whistles, though: there is a dark world of Gm tunes out there.

Re: Which annoying reel should I learn next?

Not that it matters, but you [meant] "prescriptive" not "proscriptive." (brackets mine) Ah, but are you sure, Bloo? A tune to turn one's nose up at could be said to be proscribed in the right circumstances, and pancelticpiper certainly appears to have been accused, and defending...

Re: to apple or not to apple, that is the question...

I'll agree that it's harder to find vulnerabilities, but it's not any harder to exploit them. There are plenty of rootkits based on, say, buffer overflow problems in various Unix OS programs. And once you've got root access, Unix becomes DOS, security-wise. I disagree - it's the other way around: T...

Re: to apple or not to apple, that is the question...

About the virus point: I doubt that as Macs get more popular the virus threat will increase significantly. Unlike DOS/Windows/Vista, there just aren't the many dark corners where you can hide malicious and executable stuff in Mac OS because it is built on UNIX. Mac OS is inherently safer (that does...

Re: to apple or not to apple, that is the question...

...I do agree with Emm about the Air. The lack of cd/dvd drive is annoying in a way. And it's just a hassle to have to lug around a portable one (although they work really well...my daughter has one for her Net Book and loves it). I'd much rather a MacBook Pro. Been a mac guy since 1987 and I am in...

It's not an Overton. I would return it and tell the store owner to quit their false advertising.

Re: is a sharp high B normal on a low whistle?

quick question and apologies if this is an old and obvious one just bought a used Overton low D whistle, crackin sound but the high B is too sharp when played open fingered- i can flatten it into tune by closing the fingering but this is awkward. My considerably cheaper mass production penny whistl...

Re: Irish Washerwoman

This attitude is much more rare in Ireland, where the bloody music came from in the first place. I don't know. I think they are just just as anti-, but for different reasons. I've heard stories about people turning their nose up when "The Coleraine Jig" was played in Irish sessions, as &q...

Re: Irish Washerwoman

Ooookay, can you folks argue about ITM bigotry in another thread now? Last I checked, this part of the forum was for whistle discussion. The ITM section, maybe? Or the Interfaith Cafe. ;) Susnfx says: 'funny request after you were the one who brought it up in this thread.' Bloomfield: It needs to b...

Susnfx and Bloomfield: You surely jest? Just in case you don't - I am not now nor have I ever been a supporter or follower of Senator McCarthy. Signed K - his mark. :D Of course, I don't jest. (Can't speak for Susnfx.) Ignore the ITM extremists. They sometimes give the impression CnF is dedicated t...

Re: Irish Washerwoman

I am curious, too about the flattening and the reigning musicians. Thanks, keithsandra. The real serious ITM session players (most of whom around here are Irish born and raised), the people for whom the session is their one and only musical passion, have strict ideas about which tunes are acceptable...
