Re: commercial post ''Whistles of Wood'' & Irvine pocket whi

I'm afraid I must disagree on the 3 month wood whistle. Using Penmakers "Stabilized Wood Blanks" (Google it) eliminates any need for cure-stabilization. The Media/Blank selection is Legion!

Re: Low tech construction question

If you have made a mistake and cut the bore too small, you can correct this by reducing the bore end hole(Cap it and drill a hole through the cap). This simulates extending borelength. Simple "rules of thumb" for borelength...Keep the bore diameter/borelength ratio between 1/26 and 1/32. K...

Whistle Making Tech?

Would anyone here object to adding "whistlesmith tech" to this sub-board? Many of us want to brainstorm Whistle Making without creating more work for the overworked admin types. We could learn from each other!

Re: Whistle Builders Forum??

Why not add Whistle Making topics to the "Trad-Tech" page? All the talk of Mics/gadgets/etc. would fit right in with lathes/acoustics/designs/etc. of flute/whistle making. Tech is Tech after all, isn't it? (I've posted a suggestion on the Trad-Tech board. chime in with your support?)

Re: "Pure" sounding wooden whistles

You can get a Ralf Sweet from Hobgoblin for around $185.00 and a Tamlinn(Adler) maple for about $80.00 and Gene Milligan's for $185.00 to $225.00

Re: Low tech construction question

I suggest using Pete Kosel's "Flutomat" calculator program and compare your measurements.

Or you can download the free tinwhistle calculator program by our C&F Hero "Dr Phill"

Re: 1930s/40s Saxette

The "Saxette" is basically a Brass "Shalumeau" Clarinet (right side of photo) http://www.gremlinmusic.co.uk/headpics/gr275x.jpg Adding speaker holes and twinholes can improve the range and chromatic notes to this instrument. I'll bet the ID is close to 14mm-16mm, just like a mode...

Re: Susato High D harsh in Upper Register

A Whistle that is shrill in the upper notes suffers from high airstream velocity due to lack of backpressure. There are 2 possible tweaks you may wish to try... 1) Roll a 1/2 inch wide strip of paper into a cylinder, the way you would roll up a map, until the thickness is 1mm or so. Insert this &quo...

Re: Flute Makers: What Affects Tuning And How?

There are some basic rules to flute acoustics that are not "rocket science". Here are some of the most common general rules. Basic Length/Bore Ratio: Bore ratios of between 1/26 and 1/32 are common. 1/26 will favor high harmonics (flutey) while 1/32 will favor the lower harmonics (reedy). ...

Re: Eureka! it's because the wood shrinks!

Historical woodwinds do not always follow "The American Piano Forte Scale" , which is based on the frequency A = 440 . Sharp pitch (A = 446) and Flat pitch (A = 435) were also used in different parts of Europe in the last century(approx). There was also a period of "Just Intoned Pitch...

Re: Patents on hole layout patterns

You can avoid all Patent trouble by shifting any offending toneholes left or right a nanometer or two. This will not affect tone but helps to compensate for differing finger lengths. Another thing to ponder...patents only last 1 year, the patentee must renew or it becomes public domain. Design diagr...
