Listen to Grey Larson (small holed Hall) and Matt Molloy (big Pratten) and hear the difference or lack thereof in the 'honk' department. Then understand that Molloy would very likely sound like Molloy were he to pick up Larson's 'little' flute. Very good point, remember that recording that Gary Kel...

I'm having the devil of a time figuring out where to breath on the B-part of Morrison's Jig. Suggestions? At the risk of kicking off another round of Ears Vs Dots debate, how about listening to how other players play it/phrase it/breathe through it? One of the reasons why Mike Rafferty ranks so hig...

I've played one-piece, two-piece, three-piece and four-piece flutes, and now I'm looking to upgrade. Which maker makes the best five-piece flute? That depends on whether you're counting the headjoint and barrel as two pieces or one, and whether a hose-clamp is considered a piece of the flute or, li...

Depends on how deep your pocket is.... the sky's the limit. M&E, Bleazey and Burns are good on the less expensive end. Tipple is good if finances are really an issue. If you have a wad of cash that's smoking in your pocket, Cotter, Grinter and Wilkes are nice. Inbetween? Copley, Olwell, Murray....

Re: Mix & Match

The Gallagher is supposed to be a Pratten but it isn't IMO (and that of some others here). More of a Rudall/ Nicholson, in fact, with a sweet second octave (note the praise for the second octave from Jerry Sullivan on Gallagher's site). Seth has done it again! These flutes are effortless to play an...

Yes they did. But please don't take my word for it. Try Google with "Monzani patent of 1812"
