Instruments that 'irk' you?

Are there instruments that people bring to sessions that you think ABSOLUTELY do not belong? For instance, I personally can't stand a keyboard player (electric). I don't care for acoustic piano in Irish or Scottish traditional music but an "electric piano" just bothers me. Some people don'...

Your opinion: Most difficult...?

Stemming from a conversation I had with several musical cohorts, which instrument would you say is more difficult to learn, flute or fiddle? Why? We agreed pipes was most difficult of all...whistle easiest..... Surely, personal ability, time to practice, proximity to a competent teacher, etc., will ...

Right now the Bodhran count is at 1, exactly where it should be :) No, that's too many. :D All joking aside, what is the big hang up against bodhran? Is it just experiences with bad drummers who thump through every tune? Or is it that most of you just don't think bodhran has a place in Itrad music?...

Pipe case...?

What do *you* use for a case? I have an old Highland pipe case but my bellows won't fit into it. New bellows do not compress much. Even forced down, it is over 6" tall; width is nearly the same. Is a soft sided case ok or would you recommend something hard for humidity control? Any rec's apprec...

Making your own fipple?

I'm thinking of taking on a new project but the fipple seems like the most challenging part. Any suggestions or plans? I have the requisite tools....vise, files, drills, etc.

Thanks...JM

OT: bodhran...

Can anyone recommend a 'good' place get a 'beginner' bodhran? I guess I'm looking for rec's from experiences other have had. I don't need a top o' the line drum but I don't want complete Pakistani crap either.

Any help is appreciated....Jack

Marine whistler

I saw a pic (big, 8"x12") in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this morning of a Marine playing a whistle while riding in an AAV.

The pic may be AP, but this specific pic was attributed to a Post journalist.

Thought some of you might find it interesting....

I'm looking for cd's that prominently feature PIPING. I have 'The Drones and the Chanters'; great old stuff. I would like to pick up a few 'modern' recordings but I don't want something with flute, whistle, fiddle, concertina, etc, mingled in with the pipes. Style is unimportant really.....

I am primarily curious about the piccolo head. Does is still sound like a whistle, just played like a piccolo/flute?

I would appreciate any further info. Ease of playability, tone, etc.

Thanks
