Re: Reed maker in Ennis

There's piper and pipe maker Mickey Dunne in Limerick, just 37 kilometers from Ennis. Maybe Nick Adams in Miltown Malbay or Derrick Gleeson, Coore : Miltown Malbay, I think, not sure? Ask Blackie if he knows anyone.

I see that Mickey will be playing in Cruises Bar on Sunday, 11 am.

Re: "Typical" Way of Playing?

The video is from 1967. In a photo from the seventies you identified Ken, on his obit thread, as the man in the batman jumper.
Mr. Gumby.

Yes, the Belfast Gypsies LP was also issued in 1967. So unless Ken was wearing a wig the the LP cover shoot it's not him then in the video with Felix.

Re: "Typical" Way of Playing?

"FWIW, interesting to hear FD himself talk about the Lammas fair" M.

Yes indeed. By the way, is the man wearing spectacles Ken McLeod, about 052 seconds into the video clip?

Re: "Typical" Way of Playing?

Reference? The photo I linked is of FD with Eddie (‘Sonny’) Lynskey, 1914-1972.
M
Ah, I thought it was Gorman on fiddle, and that the photo was taken by Brian Shuel at the Keele Folk Festival, 1965. Wonder where and when this photo with Lynskey was taken. In London prehaps?

Re: Serial numbers of deceased Rudall simple system flutes?

Thanks Cliff. I've added your flute, Rudall, Rose, Carte & Co. no. 6160, to the register now. The "dark wood" you mention is probably sure to be cocuswood. Yes, a photo of the flute would be good, if possible. Is there a box for the flute? Do you, or did your father play the flute?

Re: "Typical" Way of Playing?

Yes, you could be right M regarding the Rowsome set in the Lammas Fair photo, but that doesn't prove anything as Johnny and Felix were know to have swopped instruments. Also the photo with Felix and Michael Gorman in was probably taken in England in the 1960's. So the pipes were probably Johnny's ba...

Re: "Typical" Way of Playing?

I used to be unsure if it was Johnny in the George Pickow photo, but I think it is Johnny now. In the Pavee wagon photo the set of pipes have the same features as the the set in the Pickow photo. The chanter looks the same in both photos with the same Leo Rowsome reed cap with ivory ferrule, the sam...

"Why in the world would she be ashamed at how she looks? These references to Lizzo's appearance and costume are disconcerting and uncalled for. Especially here." ripleywm. Yes, I agree with you ripleywm. That Lizzo, a trained classical flute player, was allowed to play some of the flutes i...

Pat Mahon R.I.P.

Heard yesterday that flute player Pat Mahon from Easky, Co. Sligo, has passed away. I heard Pat play in Brennans, Tubbercurry, some years ago and I'd never heard someone playing the flute the way Pat did. He just stood there in the middle of the pub and played with such a strong tone. It was amazing...

Yes of course, Muireann Ni Shé, and Derrick was inspired/taught by Geoff. I looked at this video and the set does sound fine:

Re: Willie 50

Very nice photos there. Who is the young lady playing what seems to be a left-handed Wooff set? I've seen her before but can't think of her name. I recognise Rita and Marion, but not the other female pipers. Good to hear that Dave Hegarty is still doing the reed making course. He was always very hel...
