Re: MacKenzie Practice set for sale on E-bay - your thoughts?

I had two MacKenzie D chanters.
Awesome in both quality and playability.
Ian's reeds are top notch as well.

Re: Bending wood

Furniture or pipes... no matter. All wood will destress leaving you in distress if you don't over size your pieces and allow ample wait time for the wood to change (hopefully) to it's final shape before milling/turning to the size needed. Agreed (with the author) some wood is totally unusable for an...

Re: What key to add to a D chanter

If you are ordering one new, I suggest asking the pipemaker's opinion regarding voicing/tuning and additional keys. Some makers have copied older fully keyed instruments and voice their chanters based on that. We are talking about Uilleann pipes here so expect 'totally opposite' opinions regarding t...

206 views (OK, 3 were mine) and I'm wondering why no one has made a positive comment to the effort Michael has given to produce his wares.

Re: A hole is a hole...

You guys are drifting on me... I'll say it differently... I understand the intent of "A hole is a hole" means it's perfectly round and drilled straight into the chanter. I had 4 recorders (Soprano, alto, tenor and bass) and all the tone holes were cleanly drilled with a round bit... ...

A hole is a hole...

I was looking at Evertjan 't Hart's website today and noticing how crisp the tone holes are on his chanters. http://www.hartdd.com/pipes.html Over the years, I have seen (and owned) chanters with slightly scalloped or elongated tone holes, especially on flat chanters. I used to have extended phone c...

Re: CP Reed improvements in 2010

Everyone is entitled to an opinion Agreed, especially if it's backed up with fact. From experience, I sent a Gallagher C changer back to Seth for him to add two keys and make some reeds. The chanter was a few years old that I bought used. Seth called to ask if I wanted 1 tone hole 'moved' as his ne...

Re: Almond Oil for Pipes

Michael, if you do a search on 'almond' you will see some other discussions about using almond on pipes. The things that come to mind would be the expense of buying so much when you need so little. Keep it refrigerated as almond oil 'could' go rancid. Some recommend adding a little vitamin E to pres...

Re: pipes in kit form ?

Bill, you sound like a politician replying to a group of voters who want smaller government.

Kinda like The Wizard Of Oz... Nevermind that man behind the curtain.
If it hadn't been for David Daye proving it can be done, everyone would subscribe to the same thought.

Re: pipes in kit form ?

The fact that successful makers aren't doing this themselves Maybe you don't consider David Daye successful... I'm guessing, but I would say a few hundred of his chanters have been put together by novices. His drone kit should be just as successful. I think Rory was just speculating the feasibility...
