Re: New Piping CDs; Top 10 Old Standards
Agree with Mr Gumby's advice in large part, though that said there are definitely a bunch of recordings that are indispensable one way or another. One thing I would say is that I think I've got more value recently out of non-piping records - fiddlers, flautists, etc. It's almost more instructive to ...

Re: Pipe Bag Recommendations
Yes, I should perhaps have mentioned I had the exact same experience with my smallpipes. Dried out glycerine, I presume.
I kept quiet because the formula for Hardies, at least, has changed twice since my experiment back in 1999.

Re: Pipe Bag Recommendations
I'll stick my long neck in here and say I suspect that while GHB seasoning mixtures are excellent for GHB bags, they are probably less so for ambient-wind pipes. Stuff like Hardies is designed for wet air which keeps the whole system in some kind of balance; without, it will dry out pretty quickly a...

Re: dealing with F natural
I agree with john that a sort of exercise sheet with all those tricky combinations pulled out would be extremely useful. In this particular case, is there mileage in opening the Fnat key at the same time as the preceding A? I hasten to add I've not tried such a thing, as I'm mostly using my chanter ...

Re: size of repertoire
Something Hamish Moore said to me once about session playing for GHB types playing SSP/borderpipes - misremembered slightly, no doubt - "these are great, great instruments for playing in sessions but by goodness you have to be the best musician in the room". It is rather in the nature of t...

Seeing as it has a whacking great crack across the middle, I'm afraid you might have to settle for two really big chanters...

Re: Just look at all those chanters.
Hmm...at 11" across, assuming a blank is 1.5", you have roughly (11/1.5)^2*pi/4 = 42ish (pi/4 for the ratio of a circle to a square). Then subtract off half the part bits on the circumference - 0.5*pi*11/1.5 = 10ish, so maybe room for ~30 across the face. Then you're looking at a blank len...

Re: Just look at all those chanters.
Somewhere out there a snooker player's forum has a thread going "I hope that thing doesn't end up wasted on bagpipes..."

Obviously there's a fair amount of Chinese whispers happening here but you get the message. Don't do it unless you know your paperwork is right.

Hmm. Curious how the designer deals with trading off slop and stability. Seems to me every time this chanter got a tap the reed would move.

Re: In search of an efficient practice routine
I agree. Technique is the least difficult thing to sort out if you are a good musician. I would suggest that if you get your fiddle playing where you want it then transitioning onto the pipes will be more straightforward.

Re: Pipers' Rock album
On speed of learning, if you are brought up "in the tradition" and are keen and motivated, the only thing you have to do is learn how to wiggle your fingers, which is something most of us can do anyway. I've seen GHB players in this situation do astonishing things in a year.
