Re: How Flat and How often

Hiya I have some thoughts for you. I hope they help. They are just general comments but maybe worth thinking about. Which type of "trad flute" is it? Pratten (wide bore) or Rudall (narrow bore) or is it in between (as many modern makers do them now.) 1. Is the note flat for everyone or jus...

Re: Widows and Orphans in Piping

Worry not. Good musicians will always be good. And sound good. Once everyone in the world is doing this latest "trend" along will come a genius who puts rolls and stuff all over the place in every tune. My God, we will say, that is sooooo cool.... and we will all start copying !! Trends an...

Re: Brief, concise uilleann info

On the subject of Irish kilts and tartans: http://www.scottishtartans.org/irish_kilts.htm is a very comprehensive history of it all. It even mentions the "Ulster tartan" that was ploughed up out of the ground by accident on my uncle's farm near Dungiven, County Derry in the 1960's !! Gener...

Re: Phew! That was scary!

Sounds like a combination of a wonky reed, bad weather and over adjustment. The chanter is probably fine but putting obstructions up the bore will make most problems worse. Tommy I with Tommy on this one. Your chanter is likely to be the last thing that is "wrong". Reeds and weather chang...

Re: Elder Drone Reeds.

Fascinating thread.

Sounds like a few people are making their own (very good) chanter reeds out of it too.
I'd love to get a few pointers

Re: High a roll

Lifting a chanter off the knee (either momentarily or perhaps throughout the sequence) can allow things to happen in the second octave when a reed is reluctant to stay there. I would recommend venting with the F# hole whether playing on or off the knee. Again, this could be throughout the roll seque...

Re: Flute breath requirements

The short answer is........Embouchure Embouchure Embouchure :)

I can blow a lot longer on my flute than I can on my Low Whistle (Olwell vs MK)

Oh and the upper octave on a flute takes LESS breath again, while the upper octave on a whistle requires you to blow harder.

Re: The times they are a changin

Depends what you listen to !! CDs may not always reflect "traditional" music Some mentioned JH for instance. He lives in Scotland and plays a lot with Scottish musicians and for a worldwide audience. That's bound to influence what he then produces on commercial recordings. He can play the ...
