Last I heard, Robbie Hughes was still in business, down the Ards peninsula in Co. Down. I've had a borrowed Hughes and MacLeod chanter for the past 6 months and it played fine....the reed is the key part. This chanter was sent several hundred miles to a reed maker in England, and he did a good job.....

I'd like to say I love my Low A Overton ....but it's just too big for fast playing, I find....and I've yet to get anyone to join in with it at a session...my hands are average sized, and I play uilleann pipes and a bit of flute. If I take the Low A to a session, it always gets noticed, and I'm invar...

Dave Hegarty's book is very good. If you don't have access to a teacher, and even if you do, the video series from NPU will be very good. THE best resource by far must be having an experienced piper who can take you under their wing.....worth the investment of a pint or two, or whatever it takes.......

I suppose I'm in an interesting position here, being from Ulster but domiciled in Scotland currently. The whistle takes a back seat to accordion and fiddle [ and bagpipe ] here. People who play the whistle are often bagpipers, and have a style which is different to Irish tin whistle, but one which i...

I'm afraid I am another left hander who plays "right" handed.....it's a misnomer really, since both hands are being used equally, so far as the chanter, bag and bellows are concerned. And I haven't had a problem. Triplets with the left hand come easy !! [think positive] Peter Laban has got...

Tony, I haven't tried a resin chanter, but I have a Seery resin flute and it sounds as good as a wooden one...one note it doesn't play is the one you can hear if you accidently sit on a wooden flute !! My friend said Des Seery reckoned the resin to be a far superior material to any of the woods that...

Some makers produce resin practice sets for a very reasonable price and usually zero waiting time eg Andreas Rogge. Price less than a conventional practice set because it's not intended to be upgraded...but if it plays well [which it will] then you will get your money back by selling it as a dedicat...

People over here seem reluctant to say what they really think....best thing is to go to a big meeting, chat to players, listen to the tone of their pipes, maybe play them if you get a chance....but folks are usually loathe to say much about what they think about various makers...this makes it hard f...

i suppose a B nat whistle could be played along with a set of Uilleann pipes pitched in B.....though some might ask why bother with the whistle in that case.
