Re: CP: New from O’Brien, the Chromalow Whistle
Mister G- That’s where my iPad’s remote shutter was. Or maybe I should say it was the intense emotion I was feeling, thinking about Bunratty, the O’Brien family castle and being unable to claim it when I visited. Thomaston- I find it comfortable, turned partway to the right and using a modified pipe...

CP: New from O’Brien, the Chromalow Whistle
I have had numerous requests over the years for a chromatic low whistle, ie a converted standard flute. Until now, none of my attempts played in tune. The problem is with the conical shape of a flute headjoint. I decided to buy a flute headjoint, cut off the embouchure hole and replace it with a mac...

Re: Putting a finish on a whistle.
I use 100% tung oil. It’s food-safe and as well as penetrating the wood, it hardens on the outside, giving a nice shine.

CP: Whistles available, special info for Chiffers
I have a few whistles available for immediate shipping. A good time to save a little cash, if you are in the USA, with the Canadian dollar at about 70 cents. As well, I plan to increase my prices by about 10% at the end of this month. http://obrienwhistles.com/sitebuilder/images/whph080517-476x351.j...

Re: Curved Fipple Block Carving
I think that if you want to avoid carving the Delrin, an end cap is the best way to go. I achieve a curved windway with a cylinder of Delrin by reducing the outside diameter of the whistle body to the desired height of the windway. An end cap with the same OD as the main body finishes it off. This m...

Re: Troubles with making my own wooden low whistle
Yes, that will work. You have to make sure that the sides of the windway are very smooth and straight. On my whistles I reduce the diameter so that the windway has the right height, cut a slot and make a sleeve that provides a top for the windway. This method gives an air stream with the correct sha...

Re: Troubles with making my own wooden low whistle
As Ronaldo says, you need a lower airway. You can do this by reducing the diameter of the whistle where the sleeve will be.

Re: Troubles with making my own wooden low whistle
Did you cut the windway from the fipple or the wall of the whistle? It sounds like you may have cut it as a slot in the fipple plug. The floor of the windway needs to be in line with the edge of the blade. Keep the fipple cylindrical. Cut a windway slot in the whistle wall and make a sleeve for the ...

Don't feel too bad. It's our fault for all starting our names with O'.
In case anyone is interested, I have some nice rosewood at the moment and I can make you a brand new one for under US$170.
