IMHO, the best tuned, most consistant cheap tin whistle I have ever tried is the Clarke original design, but they take around 3 months to "blow in". When you get your ear trained to ITM, you will be able to hear what is "wrong" with the recorder. They just absolutely aren't tin w...

The "bible" for me is the L.E. McCullough "Complete Irish Tinwhistle Tutor" that comes with a CD and book. A google search should turn it up for you.

Warning Will Robinson! Danger!

 Put that whistle down and back away slowly! Haven't you heard that pennywhistles are the gateway drug for flutes and <gasp> uilleann bagpipes? I fell prey to that "harmless tin whistle", became addicted and within 14 years, I was into the hard stuff (my uilleann bagpipes pr...

I was complemented early in my whistle journey (3 months, maybe) and a few years later, I was informed that they actually enjoyed my playing now, but that previously they were being polite to me. :tomato: Now I know when I sound good and when I suck and I get more complements when I suck. Don'...

Have you tried Vaigra on that whistle? That might help. If you have an extra Clarke origional design lying around, you can try narrowing the windway by either squooshing the airway down with your thumb. Find or makea tool you can bend it back to it's orig. position. I make a wedge of wood for it tha...

I don't know what ratio I would give it, but I also have a bunch of whistles. People are always giving me crap whistles for Christmas or anything that looks as if it may be one, something round with holes and you blow on one end. I have gotten comments that I sounded good when I know I was really cr...

I have one of his AL-Pro low Ds and I immediately thought I was playing the flutiest whistle I had ever heard. It has the nice reedy "hard" bottom D (you know, the D with the strong A overtone mixed in) that just sends chills down my spine. :) It is astonishingly in tune for a cylindrical ...

I only make my own reeds, so I just need 3 different staples for my chanters. I use piano wire to make my mandrils (only need 3 or 4 of each staple) because I can make a different mandril easily if I want to experiment. It is much softer than drill stock or drill rod stock, so it wouldn't work for m...

The last time I saw Jerry O play, his left hand pinkie flops back and forth unless he is using a key. Other pipers I have noticed that the pinkie moves very little. It stands at about a 50-50 split in my observations as to the finger flopping around or staying still. I have Dupuytrens Contracture an...
