Re: Snakes

I have noticed that people from other states who come to Calif. kill and/or fear snakes more than locals. In my experience, old-timers around here never kill any snakes except for rattlers when they are in the vicinity of the house and yard. Thanks to cars, we really don't have a lot of snakes in si...

Re: Idol

Yeah, I just have a visceral reaction to that girl (Haley) and can't be objective. To me, she is constantly selling sex and I ain't buyin' it when the other kids are singing their hearts out. She seems like the phony we all hated in high school who conned some adult man to give her her way. And I ju...

Re: Idol

Well, she was singing and crying at the same time after she got bumped. Nothing like her normal performing style.

Re: Idol

Yeah, I think Pia knows how to sing freely without damage. She has a very Italian talent for singing with a big voice (it mystifies me that ethnic stereotypes are realities in this regard, but it's undeniable, just like so many great Irish singers). I hadn't thought about it too much with Haley beca...

Re: Idol

I like the new judging panel because it creates so much more of a positive vibe. Tyler says goofy things, but he's lovable. And I know nothing about the music or career of Jennifer Lopez, but I really like her, she's warm and supportive. Instead of a doper and a parasite and Randy, you now have thre...

Re: A louder Sindt?

Another vote for Reyburn. I own a Sindt, many Burkes and cheapos. I use the Reyburn when I am playing the melody line with trumpet, fiddle and other instruments in non-Irish music as well. The Sindt (I have the sliver model) is a beautiful, chiffy whistle but not loud and it seems to not like high h...

Re: Question re FAFSA (for college students/parents)

My fourth year of doing FAFSA's and this year, I have to do two. And having been laid up for the last month and a half, I am behind. My payroll person at work gives me an unofficial W-2 right after the first week of the year and I work off of that. I use a professional tax preparer and I schedule my...

Re: Merry Christmas to all.

Thanks again all. Just found out that the CHP believed the lady and found me at fault. But joke is on them, as it turned out she had expired insurance and basically lied to them about her coverage. Won't be a joke if she sues me, but I doubt that will happen and my insurance company seems to believe...

Re: Merry Christmas to all.

Thanks, Dale. I don't forget that, though this injury seem interminable in its healing. If I didn't have a job and a life to get back to, I would get along just fine with the doctors. It's just so weird. I felt a bit like I was an experiment with them for a while. Denny, I truly sympathize. They nev...

Re: Merry Christmas to all.

this didn't involve the Triumph, did it? Yup. Commuting to work. I made 6,000 commuting miles on it last year without incident. Lady took me out with sudden leftward swerve as I was passing. Didn't want to be passed, I guess. Happened so fast, I don't remember going down (minor concussion). No offi...

Re: Merry Christmas to all.

Thanks everybody. I am not big on cryptic messages but my situation is long to explain. I'll try it this way, ultra-condensed so yer up to speed: Nov. 15- Traffic accident, leg trauma, no broken bones, very minor laceration and a few stitches on knee. A week later, clots detected. Blood thinners adm...

Re: Merry Christmas to all.

Late to post but have spent last 30 days in and out of hospital, usually unable to post at computer stuff. So I'm one of those having a rough holiday. Nevertheless, the world is still a marvel and I've been thankful for the 54 years of health I enjoyed up to this year. Best to all my friends here.

Re: Changes with the Chicago Manual of Style, Will You Survive?

We use AP. They recently changed "Web site" to "website." It's a big deal here. We still have to capitalize "Dumpster" which I think is weird.

Re: Family history surprises

Thanks for posting. It's really interesting. Keep looking and you might find a slave FOR an ancestor. I have black ancestors on my Spanish side but its not clear if they were ever slaves, possibly just sailors, early to Hispanic New World. After 1492, a lot of exiled Jews and "moors" (from...
