Re: Fruit Loop Discussions - the Circle of 5ths

Denny is right, on a piano F# = Gb. But some pretty significant tuning compromises are required to make these notes be enharmonic equivalents; for example, on a piano thirds sound dissonant, but naturally thirds are consonant. Listen to the pipes (or a good fiddler) to hear a true third. I wasn't s...

Re: Fruit Loop Discussions - the Circle of 5ths

F# is the same as Gb: Is it though? I don't know, you tell me. As far as the circle is concerned, it seems to be. Certainly easier to switch from all sharps to all flats than to go around the circle backwards for the other half. Denny is right, on a piano F# = Gb. But some pretty significant tuning...

Sorry, Dale. It's time.

Vice Dick President Cheney has got to go. (Don't think Biden can play the tin whistle, either. Couldn't afford one in Scranton.)

With this carefully lain-out plan... OR With this carefully laid-out plan... #2 with a bullet. "Lain" is a past-participle of "to lay", not the past tense. Not quite. "Lain" is the past participle of "to lie"; "laid" is both the past tense and past ...

Re: question for the susato players...

I agree that the Susato wants quite a bit of air pressure (speed) for the high g and above---that's characteristic for them and the reason they can be challenging for beginners. Don't agree on tonguing that g, though, but what do I know. :)

Re: Overton Low D dilemma : large hole or standard hole option ?

The large hole is based on Bernard Overton's original design. Colin's current design is imho an improvement. I am not sure that Colin makes large-hole low Ds unless one is specifically requested.

Re: Overton Low D dilemma : large hole or standard hole option ?

I already responded to your pm, but for the public benefit my view is that unless you are really advanced player, I'd go with the standard-hole Overton. It's the Overton sound either way. More importantly, if this is a dilemma , it's a dilemma of riches. The important thing is getting a new Overton,...

Steve didn't like it if I pointed out you could buy the whistles he offered for half the price or less at other outlets. He always said I unfairly forgot he offered his with a 'free' pouch. Now I am thirsty. Someone buy this whistle so I can afford me some Penderyn. It is a beautiful whistle, and since you are too late to invest in gold at a reasonable price, you should consider investing in durable whistles.
