Re: How are you learning to play?

I'm not so good at learning by ear... my mind can't coordinate my ears and fingers quickly enough. So, I'll generally hit session, wait for a tune I enjoy, ask what it's called, whip out my "Fiddler's Fakebook" and mark the page... I'll go home and for that week, try to learn the music. My...

Well, lucky me... in addition to being a mediocre whistle player, I'm also a career code monkey. It's something I'll most likely get to in the future. ;) I'm just glad that people are using it. ;p I'll admit... that's *kinda* me being lazy -- I threw together this site over the course of about 5 or ...

Now, I don't know too much about stage/mixing electronics, but you'd probably just need a small board with a built-in preamp -- setup the mikes, grab a 1/4" to 1/8" converter to run a cable from your board into the PC and record away. I have a fairly recent PC running XP with USB ports and...

I'll admit... that's *kinda* me being lazy -- I threw together this site over the course of about 5 or 6 days... doing confirmation/re-edit or editing comments you made would've taken a bit more time, but it's a growing community and website, so development will continue as well. Per a request on ou...

Yep! By day I'm a web/database developer and linux administrator... I'm not using AJAX on my site, though -- anything you see on the front-end is strictly CSS or Javascript... Almost all of the other information is stored in my MySQL database and accessed with PHP. I'm planning on learning a bit of ...

Thanks, Connie... If I'd started with whistle instead of the other instrument, I'd probably be a bit more into music than I was. I think it's a great option since Irish music in general has really taken off. NICE website! I went ahead and registered, and am looking forward to posting more next week ...

You obviously haven't listened to my Low D version... I've already taken care of that. ;p

Thanks again!
You bet! I look forward to hearing some tunes from you... :) I'm glad I decided to put this thing together, heh.

We'll definitely need to see how things go -- if folks request for more time on Whistle This's boards, I'll definitely extend it; if folks are blowing through the tune, we can move on to the next one... We can always adjust from tune to tune -- I picked two weeks because, after hearing the tune seve...

I'm starting to become a big fan of wooden whistles... I haven't had the pleasure of playing a low wooden whistle, though I hope to sometime in the future, but Sweetheart is the only one that comes to mind, though I'm sure there are others. $400 is a bit steep, but I think it goes to the fact that t...

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing -- I can change the frequency depending on how often folks upload but, initially, I just wanted to make sure everyone got a chance to learn it and upload. As we go through the first couple of tunes, I'm sure I'll get an idea of who is going to be the regular group...

Thanks, Loren! I'll have to really learn it, but if anyone is willing to contribute by giving me the tunes in ABC notation, I'll gladly post them. I appreciate the compliments as well -- we already have a few great tunes, but I'd definitely love to see people explain more about their version. Rob/Wy...

What's up, brutha! Right on the main page it says: "Every two weeks a new traditional tune is posted"... Right now it's semi-automated in that it's being pulled from a database, so it's been templated; however, I still have arrange the tune, do the dot notation and get the MP3 clip prepare...

I hope that's OK w/ you. I guess it falls under "interpretation" :) Pfft! You all don't need my blessing to play music how you want -- traditional music is the celebration of variations on a melody. Besides, I just updated the sheet music and sound clip to be 'correct'. You should learn a...
