Re: What to do? Fix it or put up with it [title amended - Mod]?

... After all, we are talking about the "mistakes" that these same makers have already made... Q.E.D., thanks for that, T  We all probably have a mental short-list of makers whose work could benefit from 'correction'; but the lists won't overlap as well as one might think. It's a sli...

Re: What to do? Fix it or put up with it [title amended - Mod]?

The vast, vast majority of modifications done to pipes are ill-considered and wrong. The people doing them never believe that, though. Without the right reed, no chanter will work properly, and reeds are very individual things. Unfortunately, modifying a chanter to accept a "good" reed (bu...

Re: Reedmaking and router tables

Note that the setup shown in this video gouges _with_ the grain, which makes sense. Looks like a lot of careful aluminium machining went into it.

Re: Reedmaking: collapsed lips

I think there's a mix of good and not-so-good information in this thread, be cautious... The ending 'elevation'/aperture of a finished reed depends on several things. One is the geometry of the staple; changes in outer staple size, eye, or the point on the staple where you start to flatten will all ...

Re: Reedmaking and router tables

And cane is just a soft, light kind of wood, so is this really that different from what a router is designed to do? In some important ways, yes, I believe so. A box bit is great for making shooting boards though! Besides the work-holding issues you have already identified, the box bit will leave a ...

Rigler discography / credits

I ran across this today and though it might be of interest to Chiffboarders; it's a list of credits for Eric Rigler. It seems to double as a pretty comprehensive list of pipe tracks in Hollywood over the past 25+ years

Re: Bagmakers

I've been using Kelleher bags (Niall Kelleher and Daniela Ferretti, proprietors) for about a year now. The finish on the bags is outstanding and the handstitched bags are airtight without seasoning. They can make to any pattern you like, as well, and they're great to deal with. I have used Jackie Bo...

Re: early sets with a single regulator

The list given is not exhaustive; it omits the configuration with a D on single regulator sets, which is not uncommon (i.e. the single reg is what we would now call a 'baritone'); also not mentioned is the single regulator which plays only D, which I have seen on a couple of occasions. A common unio...

Re: Looking for Gundrills

The D reamers are superior to multi-fluted spiral reamers for pipe bores anyway. The multi-flute reamers are prone to chatter, are hard to sharpen, and tend to clog. Reaming should be done at very low speed, around 100 RPM. David Quinn wrote excellent articles on the topic for the Pipers' Review aro...

Re: Looking for Gundrills

I'd be cautious about eBay gun drills. Some folks use eBay as a dumping ground for drills that need resharpening. Also, you don't necessarily get the cutter shape you need (optimized for timber) or the airline connection fitting type that makes sense. You also should consider the implications of dri...

Re: Spruce Regulator Reeds

I use tubing staples for regs. I only have imperial measurements for those, as that is the kind of hobby tubing I use for regs. Ten & bari are 5/32, and bass is 3/16. .... I think you are quoting outer diameters there. The imperial tubing is typically 1/64" wall thickness, so inner diamete...

Re: Uilleann or Union??

zpipertom's assertion seems to assume that the union pipes originated in a vernacular tradition. What evidence there is does not seem to support that notion. Neither the 'Pastoral' nor 'Union' pipes were 'folk instruments' in any normal sense. While it is possible that there is some ancestral folk p...

Re: The future of Uilleann pipes "Irishness"

I don't think this is quite what Gay meant in that interview. I think the point was more specific to pipe making - rather, that if Ireland is not a centre of excellence for uilleann/union pipemaking, there is a risk to the tradition; not in any nationalist sense, but in the sense that players and ma...

Re: Dry reed fix!!!!!!!!!!

You're not going to get much water capacity in such a small sponge, especially with air flowing past it. Also, the nearer the source of moisture, the more exposed to sudden local changes in humidity - which can indeed stress or damage a reed. It seems unwise to me, especially given the possibility t...
