Is it mean to laugh at the guy with Tourette's? I don't think it's mean. I am disabled with a hat full of problems. One of them is Chronic Motor Tic Disorder which you could say is the inbred cousin of Tourette's - all the ticking and none of the awkward expletives. However, you don't see me live s...

I just realized that I forgot to comment and thank you guys for all the great information. But it's OK, because going over it a second time helps me see it clearer now. So, if I understand correctly, the phase of the moon theory is out, which is good because saxophones are made under the moon, too, ...

When is a piccolo not a fife?
OK, I must admit that I have come up to the boundaries of my knowledge. I cannot crack this conundrum. What the heck is the difference between a fife and a piccolo? At first I thought, "Hey, fife's don't have keys like piccolos!" Then I found some keyless piccolos. Then I thought, "He...

Lyn, this is what I had to say in a recent thread about low whistles. When I read it back, I realize that I seem to be declaring the Howard the winner, but that's not really true since I now own both and don't intend to let either go. Let me know if you have any other questions I might be able to a...

Douglas, it was over a year before I could fairly consistently get those higher notes in the upper octave, and at least another before I could get them pretty cleanly. One thing I found that helped me, was to turn the tube a bit to the right of the fipple center, which gave me a little easier time ...

I liked my high-D at first. Then I got in trouble with the people upstairs. Too loud. Now I'm not allowed to play after 11pm, thanks to that darned Susato. I hardly play it any more. I have a wide-bore. Maybe the narrow-bore would have been better. At this point, I'd rather have the money back. Get...

I have to put in a word for Burkes. They are notoriously in tune, and very forgivable--very easy to play. I have two, and they are my best. The brass ones have a more complex sound, the aluminum a brighter, purer sound. You can't go wrong with 'em. I concur. Beautiful instruments. I would only add ...

Well, I've had only basic success with the Howard Low D that I own. I've had mine since Jan. '07. It has the new head. I seem to play fine in the lower register (except low D) but moving into the upper register is a problem: can't cover the holes tight enough without using a death grip. I haven't be...

Stegoosh: I've played most of the low D's out there, and most have pretty similar finger spacing, and present a similar amount of difficulty for someone not used to the finger stretch. I think there's a site which has a chart which compares the fingerhole spacing I'd love to see that site. Do you h...

I have both. In my opinion the difference in volume is negligible. The Session feels better in my large hands, but I prefer playing the narrow bore because the high notes play so very easily. Both are fine whistles, but I don’t have any experience with sessions. I don't have large hands and I can d...

I just received my Burke Low D Viper today from Doc. It was sitting on my porch (DSL delivery) when I got home. I was out ...My opinion is most likely not worth much as I am a beginner, but maybe it might help you out. Hey, Bonnie. Thanks for posting. I own a Brass Session Burke in D and I love it....

I, too, am looking for a low D. I own a Howard, but have a very hard time keeping the holes covered. I find myself really grasping the whistle with force in order to cover the holes which impedes fluidity. I had a Susato Low D, but I didn't like it's sound. I've watched Davy Spillane's hands at work...
