Re: Registration for the SoCal Tionól--Oct. 15 Deadline!

I only managed to make it by for the concert and following session, but boy am I glad I went up. Several of us from San Diego made the trek together yesterday evening, and had a blast singing sea songs and reciting poetry all the way there and back. Pat D'Arcy and Kevin Crehan kicked off the concert...

Re: Riveted or handsewn bags

Thanks, Mark. Lots of good information there.

What sort of leather have you used? I tried the Tandy "Tanners Select Chap Side" leather I'd seen recommended, and it turned out to be too heavy to use for a double bellows gusset :swear:

Might be OK for bags, though.

Re: Off to California

Yes, it was a treat to meet Doug and Rita. Thanks for searching us out and spending an evening with us. It's supposed to be sunny and 84F/30C here on Saturday. I hope the wedding is in the shade (or indoors)! If you're still in town on Sunday evening come by The Field in the Gaslamp district downtow...

Re: 3/4 sets and hollow mainstock, advantages?

Spruce is pine. I've never met any luthier that would admit to using pine to build a violin. Pine and spruce share division, class, order and family in the plant kingdom, but their common lineage ends there. Pines are of the genus Pinus, while the spruces are Picea. They have very different qualiti...

Re: 3/4 sets and hollow mainstock, advantages?

the best violins made by Stradivari are made of pine. Careful there, Rory. If you're going to pronounce others wrong then at least get your own facts right. Violins, as a rule,* are made of spruce (top) and maple (back and sides). And the back does resonate, although to a smaller extent than the to...

Re: John Pedersen Selling His Coyne & Rowsome Sets

By the way, about that Taylor pipes site, I emailed that guy years ago with info/clear description of a Taylor set around here and he never responded nor did he add it to his list. So he doesn't seem to be very interested in compiling a list of all known Taylors. Thomas has always responded very th...

Where did that end up?
John Pedersen sold it to Rolf Knüsel. Thomas Johnson's page on Taylor pipes has a photo and description of that set here.

Re: Holy Moley!! Irish tunes on the ancient Chinese Khene

I wonder if he is using the circular breathing technic Nope. I have one of these instruments. It's a free-reed mouth organ, and each pipe plays the same note on the "draw" and "press." A note is sounded by covering the finger hole on a particular pipe and then blowing either out...
