Re: Garech de Brún's Timothy Kenna?
Moloney plays his Rowsome set on all three tracks. I have the CD edition, which has a photo of an "early nineteenth century" Thomas [sic] Kenna set on the cover, but no mention of who owned it. There's a bass regulator finial about the size and shape of a billiard ball at the top, and a go...

Re: Making Bellows
One thing that was impressive was his ability to route the stitching groove apparently freehand... or did I miss something... was he using a template of some sort? There's a groove in the back of the template that's attached to the clapper, and a fixed pin aligned with the router bit on the table b...

Re: "On Making a Ha'p'ny Whistle," a monograph by Sam Hinton
I still have some of Sam's LPs that my parents bought me in the '60s too. He was quite an engaging performer, wasn't he? His huge repertoire never ceased to amaze me, and his mastery of so many instruments was inspiring. I loved his hands-free harmonica technique, which was always a great crowd-plea...

Re: "On Making a Ha'p'ny Whistle," a monograph by Sam Hinton
You're right, the tube on my Ha'p'ny whistle is just over 17mm. A 14mm hole would be bigger than the bore of the instrument.Kypfer wrote:there is a mis-print in paragraph 7. 3/16" is nearer 4 (or 5) millimetres, not 14
I'm sure he meant 4mm. All you Ha'p'ny Whistle builders, take heed!

Re: Generation head removal
A few days ago I watched Mike De Smidt use a pair of channel-lock pliers to twist the head off of a Bb Generation, no water, heat or gentle persuasion employed, just brute force. :boggle: He wanted to modify the tube to make it into a B whistle to match his B uilleann pipe chanter. A disc sander mad...

"On Making a Ha'p'ny Whistle," a monograph by Sam Hinton
Sam Hinton was an inspiration in my musical life, and between the 1950s and his death in 2009 introduced thousands of children and their families to a world of folk music and instruments. He was a multi-talented man, a scientist, teacher, calligrapher, writer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, and ...

Re: Interesting Ebay Listing - O'Mealy Chanter
The O'Mealy chanter has a big chunk missing out of it. What a pity! I spoke with the seller and he said the lot came from a house clearance. The chanter would still be nice to have as a collector piece but a feel that it is way beyond the realms of repair. What a shame, it would have made a great s...

Thanks for the nice photo. That's Eugene Lambe. It's nice to see an old friend is still at it.

Re: Session etiquette for multi-instrumentalists
I was on business to San Diego once, and got to join in because the fiddler leading the session had also brought a guitar, which he was nice enough to share! And I keep on bringing that old Martin, wondering if you'll be there again this week to play it. Mostly stays in the bag. Myself, I mainly st...
