making cane tongues for brass bodies

I'm refitting some composite drone reeds with cane tongues--the plastic, especially in the bass drone, had a nasty tone. I'm basically modelling the tongues after the ones in the Garvie border pipes I had, which gave off a great sound and were quite reliable. Any general tips on thickness and shapin...

Try Iarla O Lionaird's on "Music of Dreams" by Noel Hill and Tony MacMahon. Brilliant.

It's funny, I recently travelled down that same train of thought---right before I got a C 1/2 set after laying down the pipes for a few years. If you really need to play the pipes, nothing else is going to do it for you. But, if you're not playing them, you're never going to be much cop at it. So......

A week's worth of tango lessons with Emma Thompson in a rooftop garden in Paris whilst sipping from a bottomless flute of Veuve would do wonders for my piping......I really think it would.

This whole mess was worth it to find out who made your C#, ausdaq. That's a lovely sounding stick.

Maybe BK was referring to K&Q chanters---I've not noticed crap playing sounding any better on flat pipes than concert pitch......actually I think my own crap playing (when it was really, really crap, not just plain vanilla crap like now) sounded better on my Mackenzie concert chanter than my Gal...

Does anyone have the scoop on the maker? It's not the relatively well-known Johnny Bourke, hey? Confusing, what with the Bourke/Spillane connection and the Spillane bellows, and......who knows something. Father D'Arcy?

Oh, that's interesting--I had actually typed in that I was a word that rhymes with light most of the time and there's an auto-filter on there. My we're precious aren't we?

When I was younger, I thought I played better when drinking. Now I realize I'm sh*t most of the time and a few scoops just dulls the pain. I do remember songs though, when getting into the cups, that I would never remember otherwise.

You can't discount the celebrity factor here--quality alone might get the ball rolling and then when 7 of 10 high-profile piping CDs are recorded on a certain maker's' sets---you get the picture. People become entranced with a particular sound and think if they buy the pipes they heard they'll stand...

That was my point--there's no chanter too good for tape. I think of it as a muffler for a chanter that has a cold.

It's good to hear a tape recommendation from a man who plays Wooff and K&Q sets :)
