drone reed air efficiency

I have this beautiful chanter reed made by Alan Burton. The drones on my C set use enough air that I have to smash the bell of the chanter down on my knee and pump the daylights into the bag to get any decent second octave play. It feels like this need not be such a chore. What are the major factors...

It's not really "available", but keep an eye out for Pat Mitchell's "Uilleann Pipes.". One of the finest.

None of which are good signs, usually, but everyone starts somewhere. It's scary being the bidder on such an expensive item when there's no record to go by. Also, language barrier seems to be in play a little here--that's obviously a bass reg, not a bass drone.

The only issue so far is that the tenor drone breaks from true pitch into the lower of the "double tone" pitches at too low a pressure--so it's great if I'm really pushing the chanter but if I back off in the first octave it breaks. The tongue is slightly weighted. Any thoughts?

Peter Laban used to mention with some frequncy (no pun intended) that his original Wooff chanter reed was still going strong after 20 years.

Excellent, maybe I'll make him an offer for the Froment! As soon as I sell my car. And my house.

Per Neillidh's liner notes, that B set is a Froment, unless he's changed over.

Thanks, Sam--yup, I've seen it, it's the most thorough and comprehensive web resource for this question I've seen. I was just wondering if anyone had any more street-level experience or observations on the process.

Thanks,

Josh
