Re: Short review of the Galeon Firth Pond & Co. delrin flute

Delrin is a bit weird to work in that it prefers to flow rather than be cut. So you can end up with little feathery wisps at corners, eg around the top and bottom of finger holes, ends of the bores, bottom of sockets etc. I know I spend a lot more time "deburring" Delrin flutes compared t...

Re: Short review of the Galeon Firth Pond & Co. delrin flute

I wanted to say thanks for posting this thread. I just got a Galeon Firth & Pond model flute. I was not able to find many other opinions on it. I'm starting out learning flute and my plan is to spend time with this as well as a Forbes pratten model to see if I get along better with small vs larg...

Re: Amateur Maker - Progress?

Those look fantastic! I like the look of the brass, i suppose over time it would develop a nice brown patina? I’m thinking of the raw brass area inside the tuning slide on my trumpet. On the outside I think trumpets and other brass instruments maintain the glossy exterior with a clear enamel coating...

Re: Beginner flute question: Carbony, wood, etc

I confirmed this at a session tonight, I ran into another flute player! She had a R&R based model from Solen Lesouëf and oh my gosh, *everything* about it was bigger than my flute. It felt much easier and more comfortable to play the full size instrument, and the other flutist had small hands an...

Re: Beginner flute question: Carbony, wood, etc

The Forbes … will knock the paint off the walls with little effort. Good to hear, thanks!! I just placed an order with Rob Forbes for a flute. I feel fairly confident it will be an improvement. In particular I’ve discovered that the used flute I’ve started with is designed for small hands with offs...

Re: Beginner flute question: Carbony, wood, etc

Thanks everyone. I have decided to upgrade but I will probably stick with a keyless flute, in part because I don't see many keyed options that I could have in hand anytime soon. After reading many, many discussions of delrin flutes on this site, I think I've narrowed down the list to Copley (delrin)...

Re: Beginner flute question: Carbony, wood, etc

That's very helpful, thanks! I will have to look further into the other delrin options for a keyed flute then. I do appreciate plastic, in that I currently do not have to worry about meticulous cleaning, oiling, carefulness, time spent playing, etc. I am a big dude and I'm not super worried about a ...

Beginner flute question: Carbony, wood, etc

Hi Folks, I'm a fiddle player and a month ago I took a plunge into learning the flute! I love it and am absolutely obsessed! So far I can make it through Cook in the Kitchen and Jim Ward's at a respectable pace, but of course my ornaments, tone, and breathing are sloppy when I try to keep the rhythm...
