Lovely playing by BrendanB indeed! The clip he has labelled "one step reel" is two tunes. Frankie Kennedy & company play the first one (followed by Ambrose Moloney's) and give its background on this clip (first posted on C&F by Brad Hurley): http://www.firescribble.net/FrankieMaire...

Hello all, Well I've finally screwed up the courage to post a few clips of my playing. Here's a jig - The Little Yellow Boy, and a single reel - Eddy Moloney's. I learned both tunes from online lessons I'm taking from Harry Bradley (which I highly recommend by the way!). Comments, criticisms, and th...

IMHO, the goal should not be so much to eliminate the all breathiness from one’s tone, but rather try to reduce weak, excessive, and unintentional breath/hissy sounds. When I hear good players, they seem to use a wide range of tones (hard & pure, raspy, breathy, etc.) to get the effect they want...

Dever the Dancer, while it is a slip jig and not a double jig, fits in nicely after the Rolling Wave (a.k.a The Humours of Trim). I once attended flute classes at the Siamsa school of Irish music in Montreal. We learned this set to play at the end of semester concert and it went over well.

Does anyone know if any of the accomplished players who use piper's grip actually advocate its general use? I've heard that one of the first things Gary Shannon tells his students is to not hold the flute like he does if at all possible!

Quit smoking. The effect of smoking on lung capacity is well documented, so its logical to conclude that getting off the butts will help to improve your playing. Of course there are very accomplished flute players who smoke like tilts (Peter Horan for example), but they do so in spite of their habit...

The take-home message is that there are lots of resources available to help us become better fluters. Brother Cocus is absolutely right that there is no substitute for sitting at the knee of a master...in person or digitally. The book is a good tool, but it's a book. If you like books you'll like t...

"Hatching, Matching, and Dispatching", a CBC comedy set in outport Newfoundland about a family that operates a combination funeral home, ambulance service and wedding chapel. Dark, a bit twisted, and somewhat off-colour (by American standards), but very funny. Its kind of like "Fawlty...

Sendng a PM

Hello all, I just composed a PM to another C&F member and hit "send". Now when I go to my PM's, the message does not show up in the "sent" box, but rather seems to be sitting in the "outbox". Has it been sent and if not, how do I send it? I'm sure i've probably miss...

The photo on Ebay, is it of the actual flute your selling or a picture of another 6-key Hamilton? The photo seems familar for some reason (the checkered cloth in particular). My apologies if I am mistaken.

cheers,

squidgirl, Sorry. In retrospect, my previous posts were OT and a bit huffy. Actually, they weren't meant to be in direct response to you original question and were not intended to criticize some of the very good advice you've received (eg - medit8b1's advice on breath support). Rather, the thread go...
