Re: Another Cane source?

I was rummaging around the internet the other day and came across Arundo Reeds and Cane. http://www.arundoreeds.com/index.htm What a coincidence, Bob! I was just telling a friend of yours in Portland about this place...and that he should check it out. Eubanks (before he sold the company), use to gr...

Right, I've seen it too. To try and link audience reaction solely to WB, or higher pitch, is really desperate...the height of narrow mindedness.

Re: Looking for wooden sanding block dia 40 & 41mm diameter

That's what I use, PJ. It's white, 41.6mm, and SCH 40. Extremely rigid. You can buy it in short lengths too. There's also a black one, slightly larger, in ABS.

Re: Bore question.

Still not 100% sure what I want to do, and it'll have to wait on fundage, regardless, but I think that I'm getting closer. I don't think you'll be happy simply with a bargain NBD. A good quality one will likely cost you an arm and a leg. And that's the quandary we're faced with sometimes...we need ...

Re: Drone combinations

There certainly are some fun things you can do with drones if you dare step out of the tradition. But, as one fine pipe maker has put it, the drones are only there to add to the dynamic plate and offer a subtle carpeted background to the music being played.

Re: A profound thought

There are endless examples of this over the years. One is the woman who called to hire a piper friend of mine for a party. When he quoted her $200 she was flabbergasted. If we're only talking about $200, that isn't much at all. I'd say it's not out of line with other services rendered, that were me...

Re: A profound thought

In my analogy of the plumber and the doctor, I was safe because Richard could have been either one. :) The moral of the story was whoever charges a lot should also be prepared to dish it out. (ditto on the Mc guy, Oleo)

Re: Bore question.

http://youtu.be/HZySRKQVGCE That's a great video. With recordings, it's hard to tell just how loud/quiet a set is. I was just chatting with Ronan and he said he was playing these same pipes with several other pipers at a session last night (big names we all know so well) and he could hear every one...

Re: A profound thought

...how is this any different from hiring any other skill? Every human is the sum total of his/her life experience up to the point where your timelines intersect, and that experience fulfills your need. Exactly. I get amused when "what goes around comes around" and someone like an experien...

Re: Bore question.

I would think it's inappropriate to postulate the idea there's no connection between bore measurements and tonal colours.

Re: Ebay Items

This is the internet, and there is often a large gap between what someone says and their intended tone and message and what someone half a world away actually understands. That's why... Not only that, what worries me are unqualified posters ( im posters?), offering opinions under the disguise of tr...

Re: Bore question.

The différences are: the wide bore types will be less easy to control in the upper octave, have more Fundamental in the sound Spectrum and less Harmonic ( upper partial) strength. The Wide bores will have larger finger holes, louder notes but less control over the dynamics of the notes. The Narrow ...

Re: Need Advice on Curing,Aging and or Seasoning Lignum Vitae

I've been using Lignum Vitae in recent years and I like it a lot for D sets. Haven't used it for flat sets yet though. Some of the English makers have been using it for years. Hunter, Evans, Lawrence, etc. A 2 x 2 x 18 billet can cost between $20 and $25 from memory. I know some makers have used Ka...

Re: Need Advice on Curing,Aging and or Seasoning Lignum Vitae

How much demand is there for seasoned lignum vitae? I happened by an old hardwood sawmill in my travels the other day. These blocks are at least 2x2" x 18" many are much larger as you can see, and have been sitting here for years and years, and all appear to be in perfect condition...waxed...
