Re: The Taylor Sound?
Taylor regulators = Car horns. :really: Listen to Patsy Touhy vamping it up on Miss McLeod. It's not just the microphone placement that makes the regs louder than the rest of the set! Taylor chanters aren't bad, it's just that the Rowsomes came up with something a bit better tonally, something that ...

Re: Session with the Pipers
I think the angst is misdirected here. :really: NPU is a great organization that does a lot for the promotion, teaching, and preservation of uilleann piping. The Cobblestone is a rare thing - a "music pub" that has actual Irish traditional music of a very high quality on a regular basis in...

Re: Session with the Pipers
As for why advertise it as a session, why not? This isn't the first time a pub advertised a gig in that manner, and it sure isn't the last.

Re: Session with the Pipers
When is the last time you went to a session with a cover charge? :P Maybe I should start charging a special cover fee for bodhran owners, guitar strummers, and beginning whistlers at my sessions: "you can join us, but that will be $12, please." It's a gig, obviously. "Session wi...

18. Blame the whistle for fluffs and tuning wobbles

My back d is doing very well. The answer to the open vs closed debate is "yes," and I think maybe Boyd owns the dubious distinction of being the longest continuously active piper in this "online community."

I think there's maybe only 10 to 20 topics that have been posted between 100 and 500 times each. Just sayin'.

Re: John Pedersen Selling His Coyne & Rowsome Sets
Wow. Gorgeous instruments. Best of luck selling them, hopefully there will be a bit of a bidding war and Pedersen jr.'s tuition won't be a worry any longer.

Re: Just back from Ireland - nothing to report
Flying with pipes isn't a big deal. Get on the aircraft quickly; use miles or points to get an early boarding group and/or select a seat at the back of the plane. If you've got a cane, you can feign an ankle sprain to board even earlier! I've never had trouble flying with my pipes in a meter ...

Re: Uilleann Piper Documentary could use a little support.
Does anybody have a clue who made Joe Doyle´s daughters set? A) I don't think Banba Fitzgerald is related to Joe by blood. B) Banba's set looks like an O'Briain or the work of one of his disciples. What's really impressive is her playing. Her pipes sound good, but she's making them sound good. . Jo...

Re: Some thoughts on Piping and ornaments.
It''s best to think of the use of rolls, cuts, staccato triplets, crans, etc as articulations, not as superfluous extras, but musically necessay parts of the tune. The real trick is knowing when to use them, and the best way to learn how to do that is through countless hours of listening to trad (an...

Re: Piping at Chicago Celtic Fest
Many thanks to Bob, Chris, Pete, Joe, Karen, John, Jeff, Sean (and Joe?), Tommy, Kevin, and Tom for a successful day of music and fun on a brilliant, sunny day. We were treated to weather pipers in the Midwest seldom see but cherish with all of their being: a day when the bloody things WORK! lol. C ...
