Lighting farts should only be done as part of a properly devised science lesson.

Of course Health and Safety Laws require a CCE qualified Fire Fighter to be present.

an experienced piper who is ALSO qualified at teaching. How do you qualify as a piping teacher? A CCE approval?? I assumed Tony meant these were mutually exclusive as no formal joint qualification exists. Teacher training give a lot of transferable skills that you can use to apply to differe...

Hi Jim, The major part of each rivet on the inside must be left or the case will fall apart. Padding of some sort is the only answer. (The rivet could be put in backwards but that would leave the unpleasant bit on the outside where it can't be readily disguised). I did think about a shoulder strap b...

Hey Ben,

They had that in the shop too.

Leon's Fabric Warehouse on Barlow Moor Road.

If you're quick you might beat the rush. :)

Hi Droner, The only people I have seen make rapid progress starting late on the pipes have already been excellent flute or whistle players. They already have most of the finger control in place and just need to adapt. Although they may also have the disadvantage of fingers locked to another way of p...

Hi Jim, The top was cut through using a band saw with a fine blade, mainly because I have access to a work shop and can be impatient with jobs I am doing myself. It was cleaned up using a belt sander and then a file. It could be done by hand using a fine toothed saw like a dovetail saw or razor saw....

Hi,

Once saw a boxwood 3/4 set, the two regs and the chanter all had noticeable bends.

It played fine and drew crowds of astounded pipers at Miltown.

On a lighter note

Hi, I've just customised my pipes case and also thought I'd learn how to put some pictures up. I started off with a Consort pipecase, removed all the rivets from the lid and removed about 3cm of depth, then rivetted the rim, hinges and clips back on. This make the lid more like a lid rather than the...

This all remind me of a story I heard a few years back, the truth of which I cannot confirm. Sissy Spacek auditions for the role of Loretta Lynn in the film A Coal Miners Daughter. Screen tests and singing auditions go well but the director also decide to talk to her husband the well known conductor...

Hi, I alway use two mikes on my chanter as I believe it is impossible for one to get hold of all the note and keep them in some sort of balance. By chance rather than design I use an AKG C1000 and a Beyer Dynamic MCE 801TG. These are both attached to a small flat bar that joins to a single low mike ...

The quality of materials and skill of voicing it is paramount. ............ Agreed, David, but the basic premise I posed is that cost = quality. Brian, I do agree that generally cost=quality. But I believe the relationship between cost and quality differs between mandolins (or stringed instruments ...

Hi, The two mandolins don't sound the same because it's mainly the wood that's vibrating (started by the strings). The quality of materials and skill of voicing it is paramount. With a chanter it's mainly a column of air that's vibrating (started by the reed). Basically we are buying a long tapered ...

I only found this forum a few days ago, little did I think my first post would be on this thread. 20 years ago Dave made me a chanter, a year later I had a set of drone. Six months on, having spent all my savings, I was digging his garden in exchange for a baritone regulator. We kept in touch, meeti...
