Re: What if ?
A good wide bore chanter should be able to accept reeds that will produce various volumes from earsplittenboomerpipes to softcottonwooltonepipes. More so than narrow bore , which can be very forgiving. The tone of WB is very reed dependant . Which can be a double edged sword because if they are reed...

Re: What if ?
Thanks Geoff for your reply, one question and if you don't want to answer thats fine bearing in mind your previous reply. Out of all the wide bore pipes you have heard is there any that come close to being pleasant to your ears. Say for instance Liam Og's romesome set .I say that because I remember ...

Re: What if ?
I remember watching an interview you gave, maybe twenty years ago and you expressed a real dislike for wide bore pipes, do you still dislike them or do you think they have gotten a bit more to your liking.

Re: What if ?
Ah , Just wishful thinking on my part. I know Geoff dislikes wide bore pipes and wouldn't have anything to do with them, but just think what advances he might have made to the instrument if he had applied his vast store of knowledge and experience. We all know that wide bore is the future of the ins...

What if ?
There's no doubt that Geoff wooff make great union pipes and narrow bore concert pitch pipe . So with all his accumulated experience and expertise is it not about time that he put all that knowledge into producing a wide bore concert pitch set that he would be proud of.How would that set sound?

Re: F# far to sharp
As far as I can gather alot of woodwind instrument making knowledge is empirical and technical explanations of the problematic idiosyncrasies of the f# hole are going to be so complicated, it's probably beyond us regular Joe's. My guess would be that the size of the hole and its position in relation...

Re: Hand Stitched Bellows?
There's no problem with stitched bellows AFAIK, other than they are probably time consuming to make. There were some pipe maker's that were still hand stitching bags but most are probably now machine stitched.

Re: Hand Stitched Bellows?
Not many pipe maker's or bellows maker's making stitched bellows these days. The cons outweigh the pros by a large margin, so why bother with stitched bellows. A good question would be why were they ever made in the first place. Could it have been as simple as a shortage of tacks and stitching was t...

Re: F# far to sharp
Doesn't Dave Quinn call that part of the chanter the zombie zone due to its lack of response to things like taping or rushing and such. Holes in the wrong place.

Ps maybe a different reed configuration.

Re: Active Uilleann Pipe Makers
Its a shame Martin Preshaw is no longer a pipemaker , he was making some lovely sounding pipes.
