Re: Harmonica for mental block insurance.
In my free-reed instrument studies I've concentrated on harmonica, Anglo concertina and English concertina (I'm now focusing on piano accordion). Of the three the one I found most musically satisfying was the English. The main reason is I really missed the 'missing' notes on harmonica, and was baffl...

Re: What's up with all the college kids and track bikes?
Wow, you guys are the epitome of hipness! So they're called 'fixies'? What a strange name. Are the riders called 'fixers', 'fixiers', 'fix bikers', 'fix riders', 'crazy'? I have seen only 2 examples of fine bike handling skills by these immortals: 1- I once saw a guy on a fixie fly past me and race ...

What's up with all the college kids and track bikes?
The title says it. A question for the up-to-date in hipness. Some history: I work part-time on a college campus and last semester I noticed several students riding track bikes around (the fixed-gear kind of bike, with no brakes!). This semester I've seen even more students on campus riding track bik...

Beware the Accordion Man!
Well, I finally uploaded an avatar. (See left.) It's a googled picture of a wood carving someone posted that I edited. It represents my latest musical passion - ACCORDION!!!! More specifically, the piano accordion. I just got my hands on a Weltmeister Saphir 120 bass accordion with musette (wet) tun...

Questions about Cajun accordion.
Are they played in the home key or cross-key?
For example if the box is in C do they only play in C or is it customary to play in a cross-key like G mixolydian (G scale with an f natural)?
Also does anyone know of any good online resources for studying Cajun-style accordion?
Thanks,
Aldon

Is there a different link for Ken Murphy & Eamonn de Barra?
The unzipped mp3 files credit all the tunes on the CD to Pat Fitzpatrick.
Thanks for the link!

Come to my gig in San Fran this Friday (Nov. 6)
Aloha! This Friday (November 6) I'll be playing from 9-12PM at the Sundance Kitchen in San Francisco's Japan Town. I'll be singing & playing my 8 string Kamaka in an original style that allows me to play melody and rhythm at the same time. All are welcome! It's always a fun time. Here's some lin...

Invitation to my gig in San Fran this weekend
Aloha Chiff & Fipplers, I'll be playing this Friday, October 2nd in San Francisco at the Sundance Kitchen in Japan town. I start at 8 and will go 'til 11. It's just me and my 8 string Kamaka - playing and singing. There's usually a hula dancer or two. It's always fun. If you're looking for somet...

Calling all band nerds! RE: Roll call & Gustav Holst
I'm just wondering: - Are you a band nerd? - If so, did you ever play "1st Suite in Eb for Military Band" and/or "2nd Suite in F for Military Band" by Gustav Holst? - Do you remember the names of the Irish folk tunes he included in his suites? My answers: - Are you a band nerd? Y...

Re: GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!
I recommend: http://www.parkswhistles.com/ Carey makes whistles with "tone rings" which can be used to significantly reduce the volume of a whistle. I bought mine so I could practice while my wife and daughters are sleeping. It works brilliantly. I bought the Walkabout, rather than the st...
