Re: IMPROVING the Concert chanter tone & expressiveness?
In my opinion Mr. Gumby is absolutely correct. Past the beginner/intermediate level fingering charts are advisory only. Depends on your reed, your chanter & most importantly your ear. Nick Whitmer So Nick, On the chanter I have from you the 'C' is sharp. I suck at being able to 'shave' the note...

Re: A reed making question
Thanks Deisman! I have been letting my reeds sit overnight before scraping, but they are usually bound…. I try to bind them part way, unwind, and bind again, at least once, sometimes twice. Haven't soaked the tails. Am looking at the bridle as well. If you want to send along those reeds pitched in '...

Can you describe how to do this exactly? Are you using the same gouge you use on the slips?

A reed making question
H ello. I am interested in hearing from those of you who make reeds. I have been working for months now on reeding my Childress B chanter. I have been able to successfully make an intone, on pitch reed with consistency, but I am having an issue which I cannot readily identify. basically, my reeds pl...

Re: Reed: bad C#, back D
Look closely at the bottom of he scrape, along the 'V.' You can scrape along the 'V' to bring in the bottom 'D', and perhaps also the high 'd' and 'c.' This may end up flattening the reed some, so you may have to trim the lips as previously mentioned.

Re: B chanter reed crow pitch?
Yes thanks Geoff! I am the other half of the conversation around 'B' reeds. And I, too, have just made my third working reed, one dead on pitch, this last one about 30-35cents flat of 'B' across the board, and one which remains a tuning mystery at the moment! (Although it sounds 'in tune with itself...

Re: Could not hear myself...typical?
Bob, I hope that you are enjoying the Tionol. They are wonderful events all around. Great for connections, affirmation, and later on, the acquisition of new skills. You only have four pipers together? Wow, I have not been in a class with less than 10! It can indeed be difficult to hear yourself in s...

Re: Please consider sharing your playing
For my musician friends at all levels, I am going to present some thoughts on why I think it's important that we record and share our playing with each other, no matter what your level of ability or experience may be. I'll start by saying that you don't do it for yourself--you do it for others. I'l...

Re: digital Piper - happy with the vPipes
Well, I am sad to report that I am very disappointed with my set of v-pipes. I have contacted Ramon and asked to have my set replaced, and if he is unable to do that, requested a full refund. Several issues have surfaced: Namely, the unit freezes up in play mode frequently, and I am unable to move t...

Re: 2.5 years in, and just wondering; am I on the right track?
Tommy Reck and Seamus Ennis were abit on the tight side. You could give them a listen! :) It's not that I don't listen to such folk, I do... just not there yet with the fingers. You understand? Arbo I try to play tighter like them... Not as tight as Reck, but a wee bit tighter than Ennis, but I don...

Re: 2.5 years in, and just wondering; am I on the right track?
Thanks all for the feedback. I would certainly like to be able to execute the tight piping tradition, and I AM working on it slowly with the guidance of a teacher. For the tune recorded, I have had no examples of what to do with respect to tight piping, nor had I any suggestions of where to include ...
