Re: Inexpensive whistle I like Product of Woodnote

Another guilty buyer here. I'm not much of a recorder player, but picked up a Woodnote tenor and sopranino for almost nothing a few years ago --- just to see if I cared enough to buy something better. I have to say they're pretty darned good, and I enjoyed them while slowly coming to realize they we...

"What's the odd's of your existence."

What are the odds of your existence? (Maybe slim, depending on who you had for fourth grade).

Much like 'Angie's List', but with the feedback coming from people I've come to know. You weed out the nonsense postings and consider the rest. Works for me.

Re: Why are these flutes so expensive, and should I buy off ebay

The cheap eBay flutes are very valuable from an educational standpoint. Buy one and you'll REALLY understand how important it is to seek out a competent maker. I started with a Tipple, as did many here. They're real flutes, at a great value. The Casey Burns Folk Flute is also great, as are the Delri...

New to me, too. With over 5 billion pages viewed, (if that's real), I guess it has someone interested. Maybe worth a second look.

Re: flute makers

I'm very much hoping to see the name David O'Brien start showing up on these lists. I just received the flute I commissioned in May (only three months, folks), and it's fantastic! I believe the O'Briens, (father and son), make as good a flute as any maker out there --- at a fair price, without the d...

My first reaction is that you've reached the right audience. But that's a lot of flute to be offering up in such an anonymous way. Care to introduce yourself to the group?

Re: Considering xaphoon...

I had one, but traded it to Ian Turnbull for an Impempe whistle, (which I'll rave on about for anyone who's interested). The Xaphoon is pretty cool as a diversion. It's sort of sax-like, pocket-sized, and able to produce a full chromatic scale. With some practice, it can be fairly musical. I kind of...

Re: your top 3 non-Celtic tunes you play on whistle

Funny you should say that. I'm suffering some mild tendonitis in my left hand, and have been messing with a Paddy-tuned harmonica of late, (since it doesn't aggravate anything except my family).

'If I Only Had a Brain' is high on my list of "Good Paddy-Harp Tunes".

Re: Looking for reasonably priced low G!

This is the point where people start piling on with lavish praises for Jerry Freeman, as they should. So I'll start. Jerry's stuff is always great, and is the best bang for the buck out there today. If something's not right with a Freeman whistle, Jerry will make it so. His professionalism, flexibil...

Re: Who is your greatest influence as a flute player?

Well, I'm not one to revive old threads. But since it's active again, I'll voice my ongoing admiration for Mike Rafferty. I listen to everything, but Mike's stuff is elegant, stately, pure drop traditional and somewhat achievable for someone at my level (at least at a stripped down level). I have al...
