Re: A new make of whistles - Part 2. The tour.

The week is more-or-less up. By the way, the list is still open, if you hurry up. There is going to be two legs, as promised, one for the US, the other Europe, though this one consists entirely of British players. The list: Flexismart is at present the guardian of a high D, shortly to be joined by a...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

There's nothing to be sorry for there. I mean there can't be any offence or anything. About the cilyndrical bore, though. What it doesn't do is affect the basic tone of the recorder. What it does do is affect the evenness of the individual notes. Cilyndrical bore recorders have a noticeably differen...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

I think that the whistle tour is a super idea and I look foward to the day that I am worthy of being part of the tour. I do look foward to hearing everyones comments. But... for now ...I will go practice Katie Bairdie. again and again. Hi Susan. I didn't mean I exclude evryone without a PHD in musi...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

The longest-known medieval recorder, the Dordrecht one, also has a completely cylindrical bore, perhaps uniquely among recorders. Spanish group "Cinco Siglos" has worked with recorder makers Jean-Luc Bodreau and Klaus Scheele on some speculative cylindrical narrow-bore recorders. When I w...

Re: A new make of whistles - Part 2. The tour.

Right. Due to interest, the scenario is now that I'll be sending a high and a low D on the European leg, and will be sending a low D to join the one already in the States, before they start on their journeys. The list is not yet complete, as i'm sure there will be more wishing to try them out. One t...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

While I was looking through this thread to find who already signed up for the tour, I came across an unanswered question. "Would it be possible to make an instrument that is intermediate between a whistle and a recorder? Or is there a definite line between dodecatonic and heptatonic fipple flut...

A new make of whistles - Part 2. The tour.

The time has come for the tour. http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/cc226/Yuri-photos/workshop010.jpg To refresh your memory, here's what Jack Lindberg recorded with a high D one. Poll ha' penny http://www.box.net/shared/6lu2ikbyj9 Will you come away with me? http://www.box.net/shared/73r7haunxa Fino...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

Thank you very much, Jack, and I, for one, am curious to hear the impressions. Meanwhile, here's the time to do something about a tour. For a beginning, MtGuru, do you have some ideas about that? There seems to be some interest. The high D that Jack has at the moment can be the starting point of an ...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

Hmmm, that's an interesting question, all right. I suppose consciously they (I mean, my) whistles are not optimized for anyting much. That's a good sales pitch, isn't it? Well, on the other hand there are a whole lot of points that any maker will be chasing. (Usually quite unsuccesfully, at least it...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

The time, it seems, has come to reveal some taboo. facts. First, recorders are not some sort of pariah instruments. You'd be surprised how many of the well-respected whistle players, among them ones on this very forum, are also well-respected recorder players. Yes, there seems to exist a snooty sort...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

That's a good question. In short, te flageolet, which Mersenne spells with two l's. It is not quite the same as the whistle as we know it. To learn more, go here: http://www.flageolets.com/ Thing is, once they added a thumbhole and a little finger hole to the ancient 6-hole whistle, it became the &q...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

Can you play that on a whistle? To answer some of the questions that arose. The shape is that of 17th century woodwind of more than one kind. In those times professional makers didn't seem to make much in the way of whistles, recorders being far more fashionable, but Mersenne for one does describe t...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

Another very brief update. (By the way, yes, I'm alive and well, being some 400 kms south of the earthquake, so even though we felt it, there is no damage so far south.) Jack Lindberg recorded some marvellous clips, Irish music, so it will give you guys a much better idea of the capabilities than I ...

Re: A new make of wooden whistles

Just a quick update on how it's progressing. Jack Lindberg of Pennsylvania was adventurous enough to volunteer to make some recordings, and I'm sure we all thank him for that. I do, anyway. He'll be receiving a high D one in a week or two's time. There are all sort of sinister dealings go...

Re: A good whistle for Rennaissance Fair playing?

I am a bit reluctant to promote myself, but not very.
Take a look at the topic next to this one: "New make of whistles". Fits the bill just right, as the look (and internal works) are modelled on historical whistles.
