Re: Symptoms of Blackwood allergy?
And not to be a pedant, but while it's popular practice to call it Blackwood allergy, it's actually not an allergy at all: it's contact dermatitis, which is a sensitization matter. One can become sensitized to cedar, for example. Understandably, this sort of thing is a big health hazard for luthiers...

Re: Symptoms of Blackwood allergy?
Nanohedron, I either didn't know or forgot about your allergic reaction. Hope you, too, have found a way around it. It was a real drag, and it was only getting worse with each contact. Burning, purple skin and weeping blisters? No thanks. I had the advantage of being able to grow a soul patch, but ...

Re: Symptoms of Blackwood allergy?
Hey, carrie! Been a while. ...a few weeks ago after a practice session my bottom lip was bright red and a little swollen, and then a burning feeling set in. I put the flute aside for a few days (the feeling didn't go away) and when I picked it up again the intensity worsened, and after about a week ...

Re: Columbo
Interesting. I was under the impression that sarsaparilla came from places like the Philippines, and was in danger of over-harvesting. I didn't mean to imply that; my bad. You're correct, and the East Coast plant called sasparilla isn't related (I don't think). Got pics? I'm curious about this plan...

Re: The job of songs
Thanks for this. I like how it touches - more like inspects, actually - more on the community and its individuals, and what the music expresses of them. To me this has always been the heart of the matter: I can communicate, through the music, what I otherwise have no voice for. Never knew the metaph...

Re: Left-handed flute player question
I wonder if some people find it easier to follow a teacher as if looking at a mirror. This is true for some, as different people learn best in different ways. Some are visual learners, some more mathematical, some auditory, and then mental facility and flexibility within those categories comes into...

Board Issues
No doubt many of you have encountered maddening glitches in the Board's operation. We have contacted Dreamhost, and at the moment they are troubleshooting the matter. We are aiming for a resolution in whatever way we have to come to it. The main issues are two: lag time when initiating functions (IO...

PS: Are the people having trouble posting here, by the way? I drafted a post a couple of days ago and gave up after trying to add it half a dozen times over two days. Not entirely hopeful about adding this one, but I'll give it a try. Yeah, all the time. I get the alarming error message: This page ...

Re: Zouks
Bit of an update: I've come to the conclusion that good long-scale zouk players are monsters. Long scale + light gauge = tremendous tension (it's amazing that such a delicate-looking instrument doesn't explode), so pressing the strings requires a most firm and steady touch; there's no slacking off w...

Re: Tweaking a whistle with a dirty/harsh sound
I’m given to understand that making musical instruments is big in Sialkot… It can be a touchy subject, but there is much consensus on having been burned by an attractive price, and I’ve been there. I’ve been there twice on the flute side — but still at whoppingly greater expense than the lessons le...
