Re: New Whistler Posting!
I don't remember if I welcomed you. Welcome! Good choice on the Feadog. Oaks aren't bad either. LotR is indeed awesome; I'm not a gigantic Peter Jackson fan, but I liked the movies. Tolkien tho is a genius storyteller and if you've only seen the movies (a lot of people seem to), you're missing out o...

Re: simple system fingering on a Boehm flute
I play Boehm flute, and (in Irish music) I never use XXXOOX for F#, except very occasionally when going down from G. Always XXXOXO. It works just fine for Irish music, a little flat but easy to push into tune, no harder than simple system's XXXXOO.

Re: a tendency?
A high whistles is a fine instrument in its own right... don't see why the low whistle has to be superior. You're right that people often start with a high one, and later get a low one. But I've never gotten the impression that they then stop playing the high one.

Re: This just doesn't seem like a Chicago thing
Ooh, that sounds like Chicago all right. Falsifying addresses, bending grades, meaningless corrupt spending... mhm. And they told us in eighth grade they didn't have enough money to get us new textbooks with fancy new features... like covers! And pages 10-12! Really now XD

Re: Timing/Phrasing for a beginner
Second, while there is no doubt that certain qualities of Irish music comes from subtle departures from strict integer subdivisions, for those of us who are new to music, working with a metronome gives a perceptual framework from which be aware of those subtle variations. Metronome can't teach you ...

Re: Top Tips for Intermediate Whistlers
Or should a whistle leave it to the rhythm players to emphasize the pulse? NOOO. I'm no accomplished ITM player, just a couple years of amateur, but one thing I've learned, is that if the melody players can't hold the pulse, they can't expect the rhythm players to do a thing to fix it. They're ther...

A Gemeinhardt 2SP is $400 right now, and it plays decent enough (I've had one for a few years), not too shabby...greenspiderweb wrote:
Seems no easy choice to get that sound he liked, unless he does a lot of flute shopping, or instead just goes out and buys the same Boehm flute to play.

That's awesome. However, I've seen acoustic flying V guitars, and while they look amazing, I don't really think they sound that great at all.

I always called em dodgeballs or kickballs, cause of the sports we'd paly with em. I think kickball is most proper.Walden wrote:Yeah, we used those too.fel bautista wrote:We played with those red balls. Re: What do you think about while practicing/playing?
Well now... I'm an atheist (always with a small "a" of course") and I seem to get along just fine with my flute playing. My ideas of "perfection" like a curvy female backside or a nice dram of single malt tend to distract so I I don't attempt to visualize. I suppose the bes...

I made some of my closest friends playing foursquare in 7th-8th grade. We played with tennis balls- you get darn good that way! When teach took our tennis balls away, we played with woodchips. That didn't go so well.

Re: What do you think about while practicing/playing?
I try to plan out what I'm doing immediately before I do it, but not too specific, since my conscious mind is still not very creative. Otherwise, I think about God. That helps me play better; I figure He can play the darn thing better than I can anyway. I think I understand what you're saying, and ...
