Re: Eugene Lambe - Trip to Fanore and other recordiongs

He also played on one of NPU's Music for the Sets cassette tapes made in the 80s.

I sometimes play a few tunes with Eugene's (ex?) partner Jody's sister Kelly, who has Lambe flutes and whistles.

Thanks, Nick. Gastritis, poor guy. And Gems in a Casket, kind of morbid.

Black wax mixtures

Years ago I read somewhere to use "pitch" for black wax so bought a can of jeweler's pitch for that purpose. When i unwind those old reeds a little cloud of dust comes off :o but they hold together OK. In recent years I've started adding a bit of linseed oil, in a totally unscientific mann...

Re: Who is responsible for saving the UP's from extinction

A friend told me every piper in the Eastern US in the 80s seemed to have a Eugene Lambe set. By the same token practically all the pipers around San Francisco did business with Alan Ginsberg the late 70s. Were these two the most prolific pipemakers in that era? I try and think of others making pipes...

Re: Sliding up to C nat

You don't encounter pipers much and you're in Clare? I've heard it all. Not that they're necessarily playing on every street corner 24/7 but you could ring up NPU or the local CCE branch and find one you could hook up with for tips or lessons. Cutting with the thumb is optional, too. It's a ha...

Re: Sliding up to C nat

I put the middle and ring fingers of the upper hand back down while moving into the C. Took me a while to figure that out, Pat's description didn't mention that at all, leading me astray for a while.

Re: Patsy Brown's double chanter

With NPU there are members, and Members, and Members . I paid for a basic website membership - 20 Euro - expecting to be able watch all of the videos, if nothing else. Well, can't watch a lot of them. They have these other two tiers where you can watch more, and a full member (50 sheckels) can watch...

Re: Vintage Piper Recommendations

I made a playlist on YouTube of Irish Pipers of the Past for the local club, you might take an interest in some of those players, it includes clips from some of those mentioned. I also put up most of the clips of piping/fiddling/flute playing at archive.org years ago, so people could hear what this ...

Re: Patsy Brown's double chanter

Is that Joe Doyle with the double bass? I know he played a Taylor type set, I want to say a Johnny Bourke, with a double. Patsy Brown also likely put the flute keys on an ivory Taylor chanter, I got to hear that in person when I was starting out. The owner had a couple of long pipe cleaners in the b...

Leo Rowsome King of the Pipers documentary

A nice bit of film on Leo on Vimeo. They talk with family/friends/students/admirers, and play some new-to-me recordings of LR in the background too. For those interested, the reel you hear off and on throughout and almost in its entirety over the closing credits is called "Apples in Winter"...

I've a copy of the Pipers' Club Ceili Band LP. Fun stuff.

That archive has some real gems, like Séamus Ennis playing Port na Gioboige.

Re: Does anybody know that tune

Tommy played some fascinating variations for that tune, played B instead of Cnat in the 3rd part too. There just aren't idiosyncratic musicians like that any more.

I learned that tune from his LP too, well, cassette tape actually.

There's some cuts on Soundcloud with Preston playing a Wooff B set too; he's waiting on a C or C# Angus set as well. His band has a CD: Na Rósaí - Portland Based Traditional Irish Music

Preston Howard - The Primrose Glen

The best piper to ever come out of Chico California - sorry, Don - has a solo CD or download available from the CD Baby Music Store. Solo pipes in D, occasionally with the bass drone slider removed to give GDd for a nice change of tuning - hafta ask him how to tune that - probably you could shove a ...

Re: New double chanter?

Yes, I know about Starck, but MacGregor was building pipes 200 years ago, and apparently was the first to add keys to the GHB chanter, a century before Starck came along. http://houseoflabhran.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/MacGregor-bagpipe.jpg Malcolm MacGregor Prize Bagpipe – Antique Scottis...
