Re: What is a Rowsome Style Chanter

Leo had rushes in his own chanter. He seems to often have been sharp of 440 anyway. As for his customers' instruments you'd have to ask them, never heard if their chanters came with stuff in the bore. Martin Kerrigan sounds like someone who'd know about that - he's said to be an expert in getting Le...

Re: What is a Rowsome Style Chanter

Flutemakers went through a process of slavishly reproducing old instruments, many of which had funky tuning, to put it mildly. As I understand it few do that any more. Partly this was because the originals were built with different ideas for fingering in mind, akin to how to how Leo's pipes were mea...

Re: Is the influence of Tommy Reck underestimated?

Oh, the Wexford's a great old tune, redundant in spots of course but if you're not up for some repetitiousness it's puzzling to me why you'd be playing this stuff in the first place. The tunes I have a problem with are "new" ones that are just rehashes of oldies. The other day a flut...

Re: Is the influence of Tommy Reck underestimated?

:really: Cripes, you're right. I've been listening to that for almost 20 years and never realized what he was playing! Thanks so much for that. Does this look about right? | (3ABc |:d2Bd c2Ac | BGAD G2GF | GABc dcdf | e^def gdBD | ABce d2Bd | c2Ac BGAF | GABc dgfg | ecAD GABc :| |: dgfg edBc | dgfg ...

Re: Is the influence of Tommy Reck underestimated?

That's a terrific recording. Never noticed he played DFAd DGBd in Higgin's. The 1960 tape is almost all familiar material but Tommy did play one very curious hornpipe on it, which I transcribed as Tommy Reck’s Fancy . I've never quite been able to memorize this one, it's one of those tunes whose phr...

Re: Is the influence of Tommy Reck underestimated?

Are they making any headway on issuing the 1960 tape commercially? Or is anybody even bothering. That should be in every home, like the Ennis Return to Fingal, it's that great. I put a couple of cuts on my "Irish Pipers of the Past" playlist on YouTube, for the curious. Another aspect of t...

Re: Is the influence of Tommy Reck underestimated?

Maybe you can see it here, forget, but on the NPU Source videos of Tommy and Mick you can really see how Tommy made the Fnat in the Bunch of Keys - he kind of "crinked" his middle finger out. That was something that really stood out for me watching those vids, he played Fnat right and left...

Re: Is the influence of Tommy Reck underestimated?

Video and audio were quite good. This youtube copy is a really horrible one, a real shame. A shame in what way? Beats nothing at all. I digified the old VHS tape I got from Mark W who got it from you (I've always assumed) for a terrific local piper who was really interested in my description of wha...

Re: Does anyone recognise this chanter?

Looks like Tim Britton's work. Didn't the Pakistani makers ape his stuff? Or Kirk Lynch. One of those.

Re: Reedmaking dingus

I think I'll stick with the blu-tack after all, despite its clogging up it's great how the slip adheres to the tack so you can lift it off the cylinder and see how things are progressing.

Re: Reedmaking dingus

Tried a few more items from the Home Cheapo, very enthusiastic/interested employee suggested 3M spray adhesive - leave it on one side of a stick for a day or two, and it retains its tackiness, indeed I had to fairly yank the slip off to get it free, but it didn't leave any residual junk on the slip....

Re: Reedmaking dingus

Thanks for the suggestion, M. I tried the strap from a pair of swim goggles, they were initially very grabby but instantly clogged up with dust. Seems you have to find just the right stuff here. I'm thinking the strap is latex but just a guess.

Re: Eugene Lambe - Trip to Fanore and other recordiongs

Ah, that's more like it, yes. Go Denis! When did Eugene give up on the tenor drone mounted on the chanter's windcap? Uilleann meets cabrette.

Re: Reedmaking dingus

Anybody have any ideas on finding the right kind of silicone or rubber for this? I tried some shoe inserts and that material didn't work at all.

Re: Eugene Lambe - Trip to Fanore and other recordiongs

Is he playing a Wooff set there - maybe your own D pipes, Peter? Looks a titch too, well, elegant to be Eugene's work. High D key on chanter, general flow of lines and proportions on same, gooseneck inlet. Think I see a tapered ferrule on the bass drone slider too.
