Re: High C whistles, what is your favourite and why??

If any of your playing will be outdoors, it's hard to best the Susato Kildare. Very resistant to wind and, in my opinion, the best sounding key in the Susato line. I recommend the o-ring tweak that you will find discussed in older posts.

Re: WARBL arrives

Thanks, Michael, for posting your configuration values. Gives me a good starting point for experimenting.

Looks like we also owe another thank you for making the configuration tool available in the App Store.

Much appreciated!

The WARBL website has a demo video showing a cool hack by Gerard Kilbride - a Susato mouthpiece mounted over the regular tubular mouthpiece. Looks fairly easy.

Thanks for the update. Looks like the orders are being processed much faster that predicted.

Re: Akai EWI?

I suspect that you will adapt fairly quickly. The standard EWI mode gives you more options than either the flute or sax modes and didn't seem to add anything significant to my learning curve. I had a background in tin whistle and clarinet. (EWI fingering is far more logical than clarinet.) I noticed...

Re: Considering a Burke Whistle and need some help!

You can take it apart. The only contact points are the O rings. You do need to take some care putting it back together, but nothing all that difficult.

Re: Considering a Burke Whistle and need some help!

You are on the right track. By the way, the narrow bore Burke D is not really narrow in comparison to most whistles. Mine is almost exactly the same diameter as a standard Generation D. One of the advantages of a Burke is the nice tuning slide that rests on rubber O rings. It can be adjusted much sh...

Re: Received my Freeman Mellow Dog - I have a question.

While it's not impossible to have a bad whistle from Jerry -- nobody has perfect quality control -- it is very unlikely. I am happy with the two Mellow Dogs I own and consider them a good choice for beginning players. So let's consider other options first. I remember as a beginner that I thought I h...

Re: Best maintained inexpensive whistle standards?

Teflon plumbing tape -- the kind used for sealing threads -- will do a good job of tightening the head without leaving a residue. Don't get the head too tight, it can crack and require additional repair. (Personal experience.)

Re: Putty Tuning

The poster putty fix worked so well on the Generation and Feadog whistles I had been using, that I just automatically did the same for the Dixon Trad I purchased. It was one of the old design, narrow window models and it lost some of its complexity and character with the putty installed. I was glad ...

Re: Loudest high D whistle?

We seemed to have moved away from just the lower cost category, so I would add Reyburn whistles to the list. The Reyburn high D is on the loud side and carries beautifully in the outdoors. However, if the temperature drops significantly, a Susato is easier on the fingers and has fewer condensation p...

Re: Feadog vs. Generations

I think it is more of an independent design rather that just a tweak. The whistle head starts out as a C Feadog head -- not a D - with major changes to the blade and filler under the ramp. Then Jerry adds his own whistle body. You end up with a wide body compared to a standard Feadog. In my opinion,...

Re: Techno Question

My first generation Zoom made a fine USB microphone before I moved on to a more conventional mic. My Zoom came with a screw-on handle that allowed me to use an inexpensive desktop microphone stand. It was a versatile setup for recording one or two people in a small setting. I am also a big fan of Re...

Re: New “WARBL” MIDI Wind Controller

A most interesting product. I play an EWI, but this would be much more portable. The documentation seems to indicate two mouthpiece options. One with a single opening for constant pressure control. The other with an air escape hole would allow for a more natural method of playing. Am I interpreting ...

Re: Thumb rest ideas?

I tried a couple of different commercial thumb rests without much success. Now my low D whistles all have a fat O-ring above the bottom two holes. Surprisingly, it does not get in the way of fingering and it gives just enough extra support. I doubt this would work for something heaver than aluminum ...
